Selection Process

A selection process for student participants in HSU international study and research programs is imperative in order to set and maintain high program standards, as well as to ensure the safety for all participants and the continuation of the program year after year.

The selection committee will work to select students who demonstrate a solid academic background, a high degree of maturity, and a desire and ability to contribute positively to the study or research abroad program in question.

ALL APPLICATIONS WILL BE CONSIDERED WITHOUT REGARD TO RACE, COLOR, NATIONAL AND ETHNIC ORIGIN, DISABILITY, SEXUAL ORIENTATION OR PREFERENCE, GENDER, OR AGE.

A maximum of 20 students will be admitted to the program.

Program admission requirements:

  • All application materials received by application deadline
  • Good academic standing
  • Minimum 2.5 GPA
  • No incidences of offensive/disruptive behavior, plagiarism, or cheating on file with HSU Student Affairs.
  • Signature on application acknowledging an understanding of application requirements and course policies (refer to application)

Applicants will be evaluated based on the following:

  • Student status (at the application deadline) - priority given in the following order:
    (1) seniors, graduate students, and those that have completed/will complete their BA/BS between Spring 2007 and Spring 2009,
    (2) juniors and those who graduated with (with BA/BS) in Fall 2006 or before,
    (3) sophomores,
    (4) freshman,
    (5) applicants with no college credits.
  • HSU students will be given priority over non-HSU students
  • Anthropology majors will be given priority over non-majors
  • GPA and quality of college transcripts
  • Previous coursework in related subjects such as primatology and biological anthropology
  • Maturity and preparedness as demonstrated in letters of recommendation and resume
  • Purpose for attending the program and relationship to future goals
