Detailed Description:
GreenLab is a research and development arm of the Department of Applied Technology at Humboldt State University and is a University chartered Research Institute.
The lab functions as an on-going, inter-disciplinary think-tank of researchers, students, and professionals fueled by ideas born of real world needs; creating aesthetic, high-performance, well-engineered building products and systems that are environmentally friendly and meet or exceed the needs of the user.
Ideas that are ripe for commercialization are market-tested and designed for living—that is, how we must live to sustain ourselves and remain in balance with nature and with our humanity. Promising products and systems are developed with sensitivity to the demands of the astute buyer/user, architect, and builder who expect:
- High-performance
- Strategic and enlightened thinking
- Satisfying and dependable use and operation
- Personal and ethical satisfaction with the solution
Designs emerge in a creative, problem-solving environment where faculty and students interact and systematically test results against the high standards of the real world professional user. GreenLab faculty and student innovators consult freely across disciplines and work with colleagues in marketing and design to move solutions from idea to prototype to commercialization.
As part of the Center for Entrepreneurship with the School of Business, GreenLab sustains itself with firm roots in a curriculum that promotes the sensitive and creative use of technology in solving today’s problems; and an environment that invites creativity with a conscience. Students are encourages to be innovative and inventive; to develop the skills, knowledge and insights needed to bring an idea to reality and take it to the marketplace.
GreenLab sponsors visiting scholars and practitioners to participle in the problem-solving process, provides competitively awarded stipends for undergraduate research and graduate student assistantships, and offers the opportunity for funding to bring good ideas to reality.
