Meeting Announcement & Final Call for Papers
Final Call For Papers.
This is the final call for oral and poster presentations. Abstract
submission must be done online between 15 February and 22 March 2004.
Authors must be registered for
the conference before they can submit an abstract. Once registered,
you will receive an e-mail confirmation and password. You will then use this
password to submit your abstract. You must have already pre-registered
by March 15, 2004 in order to
give an oral or poster presentation.
Details on presentation guidelines are available here. Oral presentations must be in Power Point version 2000 or XP(2002) version in PC format compatible with Windows 2000 and XP. They are limited to 5MB in size. Drafts are due by May 24th. We will test presentations and let presenters know by June 1 if there are problems. Final versions must be received via our ftp site by June 5th. Presentations not received by that time will be removed from the program.
Registration
Preregistration is $195 for regular members and vendors and $125 for students before 1 May. After 1 May, registration is $245 for regular members and vendors and $185 for students. Registration fees cover administrative costs, printing of conference materials, refreshment breaks, special refreshments for the poster sessions, and the welcoming reception on Saturday, 12 June 2004. All active meeting participants (i.e. those contributing papers or posters and attending technical sessions) and vendors must register. On-site registration will be in the Jolly Giant Residence Halls. A $25 fee in addition to the late registration cost will be charged for on-site registration.
Getting to Humboldt State:
Participants can either drive or fly directly to Arcata. Arcata is in coastal northern California in the heart of ancient redwood forests, home of the tallest trees on earth. Arcata is serviced by the Eureka-Arcata airport (ACV) and both United (800-547-9308) and Horizon airlines (800-242-6522). We encourage people to fly into the San Francisco Bay Area and carpool to Arcata (a beautiful 5-hour drive up Highway 101). This is typically less expensive, increases flight options, and will ease congestion at the Eureka/Arcata airport. We have arranged on-campus housing options that will allow participants to arrive on campus a day early and/ or stay a day after the end of the meeting. We encourage participants to take advantage of this option to enjoy the local area; this will also help spread out airport arrivals and departures. For information on local transportation options, including shuttle service between the Arcata Airport and campus, see our local transportation page.
Parking
Campus parking for meeting participants requires a University perking permit (1 week permit is $4.50). Permits will be available at the Registration desk.
Housing and Dining Services
On Campus Accommodations:
We will be able to accommodate approximately 560 people on campus. There will be a limited number of single rooms available. In order to accommodate the largest number of people, we encourage people to share rooms if at all possible (please see the double rate). All rooms are resident hall housing with shared bathrooms.
It is standard for the HSU Housing and Dining Services to have a meal plan included with the room (a separate meal plan is not offered). However a modified meal plan (4 breakfasts, 4 lunches and 1 dinner) is offered to reduce costs (we have taken into account what meals participants are actually likely to eat in the dining hall as opposed to the picnic, banquet etc.). The prices for staying on campus are detailed below.
Double room in Cypress, Hill or Canyon Halls = Package price of $149 per person for lodging the nights of June 12-15 (check-out is on June 16), breakfast and lunch on June 13-16 and dinner the night of June 13. All beds are twin - a double price means you are paying for one bed in a room that has two beds.
Single room in Cypress, Hill or Canyon Halls = Package price of $177 per person for lodging the nights of June 12-15 (check-out is on June 16) breakfast and lunch on June 13-16 and dinner the night of June 13.
Early Arrival or Late Departure Prices: $22 per night per person for a double room and $29 per night per person for a single room. Early arrival for the night of June 11 th or late departure arrangements for the night of June 16 th can be made by filling out the appropriate information in the registration materials. These prices are for housing only. Meals may be purchased at the cafeteria for those staying late.
These prices include the 4/4/1 meal package, a bed with a pillow, linens, blanket and towel. The meal cards allow one meal per meal period. Rooms have a desk, twin bed and closet for each guest. We have a limited number of hangers, reading lamps and alarm clocks available for checkout. Early arrival for the night of June 11 th or late departure arrangements for the night of June 16th can be made by filling out the appropriate information in the registration materials.
Off Campus Accommodations:
There are a variety of options available in the Eureka/Arcata area for those wishing to stay off campus. Download a pdf of off campus accommodations.
Climate
Even in the summer the climate of Humboldt County is cool. Typical June weather is in the low 60's (degrees Fahrenheit) during the day and low 50's (degrees Fahrenheit) at night. Fog is common in the morning, but significant rain is uncommon this time of year. Combined with frequent breezes off the ocean, it can feel quite chilly, so please be advised to bring some warm clothes and a jacket !
