Political Life:
Dr. Horel was very involved in the political life of Arcata. In an article dated October 10, 1908 written by Mrs. Eugene Fountain, we are informed that at a meeting held in the Town Hall of Arcata to discuss the building of a road, Dr. F. R. Horel was chosen as Chairman of the meeting. Further evidence of his political involvement is that Dr. Horel was on a six man committee sent to Fortuna. The committee was called a Special Redwood Park Committee. They were sent there to view a 1400 acre piece of land for which the people of Fortuna wanted turned into a state park. Additionally, one of the most prominent references to his political life can be found in an article from the Blue Lake Advocate.
"The hottest election ever held in Arcata took place last Thursday, it being the election for a high school trustee. There were two candidates, Lee F. Wiley and Dr. F. R. Horel. All day long there was a hurrying and a scurrying to get votes out . . . Some personal matter must have been at the bottom of the affair, for no one could find fault with either of the candidates . . . When the votes were counted, it was found that Dr. Horel had won by some 40 odd votes."
Social Life:
Dr. Horel and his family were certainly no strangers to Arcata Society. In fact, June 15, 1895, the first lawn party of the season was given by Dr. Horel at his residence on the hill. The grounds were beautifully decorated with chinese lanterns, tents, etc. Moreover, Dr. Horel's name can be found on numerous guest lists for weddings, parties, and funerals.
Business Life:
Although Dr. Horel may have been quite busy between his family, his medical practice, his political life, and his social life, he some how found time to indulge in business ventures. As referenced in the Susie Baker Fountain Papers, Dr. Horel and C. S. Daniels purchased the Humboldt Manufactury Co. This purchase was made for the purpose of conducting a general mercantile business.
