Dr. Horel's Interest in Technology
Dr. Horel certainly had a strong interest in new technology. As reported in the Blue Lake Advocate, Dr. Horel and a local banker had received the second and third automobiles in Arcata. These autos were evidently quite an attraction. Mrs. Fountain, the writer of the article, projected that before long, Arcata might have as many automobiles as Eureka.
Dr. Horel's automobile made quite an impression at Willow Creek as well. As referenced in the Blue Lake Advocate, the people of Willow Creek reported that:
"The first automobile ever on our roads came in since last week. Dr. Horel of Arcata has the distinction of being the driver and any one familiar with our steep roads will think it quite an achievement."
In addition to his automobile, Dr. Horel is reported to have owned and designed a boat with a Mr. W. F. Hunter. In 1895, Dr. Horel is said to have taken his "gasoline launch" for its maiden voyage. The name of this vessel was "The Seal". Although the launch began without difficulty, the vessel soon was caught in shallow water with destructive effects. A second launch had to be postponed for another time following repairs.
