Online Manual: Roster

 

The Roster gives you a searchable list of the other students in your course. For each student, you are given a link to their home page for the course and their email address (if they have chosen to make it available). Finally, you can see if a student has an observer assigned.

From the Student View:

Searching the Roster

  1. Click into the content area where the Roster link is kept (this varies from course to course, but is usually the Communication area).
  2. Click the Roster link.
  3. Enter as much of either the last name or the username as you can remember in the Search field.
  4. Click the Search button.
  5. A list of students in the course who match your search criterion will appear. For each student, you will see their name, their email address (if they have chosen to list it via their privacy settings), and the username of any observer account assigned to them.

Viewing Roster By First Letter of Last Name

  1. Click into the content area where the Roster link is kept (this varies from course to course, but is usually the Communication area).
  2. Click the A–Z, 0–9 tab.
  3. Click the number or letter link you wish to see.
  4. All students with last names beginning with that number or letter will be displayed.

Advanced Roster Searches

  1. Click into the content area where the Roster link is kept (this varies from course to course, but is usually the Communication area).
  2. Click the Advanced tab.
  3. Entering text in the Containing field will return all users who have the text you enter as part of their First Name, Last Name, or Username.
  4. Checking the Active within the past box and entering a number in the days field will return all users who have logged into the system (though not necessarily entered the course) within the set number of days.

Listing the Complete Roster

  1. Click into the content area where the Roster link is kept (this varies from course to course, but is usually the Communication area).
  2. Click the List All tab.
  3. Click the List All button.
  4. All students in the course will be displayed, in pages of 25. You can move to other pages by clicking on the page number links at the bottom.

Viewing Student Homepages

  1. Click into the content area where the Roster link is kept (this varies from course to course, but is usually the Communication area).
  2. Locate the record of the student whose homepage you wish to view using one of the above methods.
  3. Click on the Name link for the student.

More Information

Q: I can't find someone I know is enrolled in the course on the roster! Why not?
A: The roster only lists people who are enrolled as students. Instructors, Teaching Assistants, Graders, Course Builders, and Guests are not listed in the roster. Furthermore, users who have a system role of System Administrator are not listed in the roster, even if they are enrolled as students.
Q: Why do only some students have listed email addresses?
A: The email address is only listed by students who have set their privacy settings to allow the address to be listed.
