What is Social and Environmental Responsibility?

It is difficult to describe because it is purposefully intended to be interpreted according to the values of each individual, but collectively it represents our intent to be responsible for the social and environmental consequences of our actions. Every choice that we make has an impact. SER asks us to consider and make choices in accordance to the long-term best interests of both people and the environment in the conduct of our professional lives.

Most graduates of HSU, living to their normal life expectancy, can expect to be around until 2060-2070. Their generation inherits unprecedented challenges including shortages of natural resources (petroleum, water), global warming, public and private debt, increased populations and the resulting increase in demand, plus many others. In short, students today are being placed into the vanguard for decisions and solutions that may well determine the long-term viability of our society.

Making personal decisions, while important, are not enough. We must fundamentally transform workplace culture, values, and practices in order to gain the kind of traction that is required for revolutionary change. Motivation behind our life's work is changing from “making a living” to making a difference.
