Founded in 1986 by percussionist and HSU professor Dr. Eugene Novotney, the Humboldt Calypso Band is dedicated to the performance of traditional and contemporary music from the Caribbean, Africa, Brazil and the United States. The Humboldt Calypso Band prides itself in maintaining an accurate and authentic connection to the roots of steel band movement and innovative musicians of Trinidad, the island nation on which this unique percussion phenomenon was born.
Comprised of a full orchestra of steel drums, the band performs regularly in Humboldt County. They have also performed with some of the best steel bands in the world at the National Panorama Competition during Trinidad's famous Carnival celebration.
