CCAT's Pedal Power Grinder
Project by Bart Orlando and HSU Students, Written by Ben Erickson

Dustin demonstrates tool sharpening on CCAT's pedal power grinder

The pedal powered grinder uses an exercise bike with a chain driven flywheel. A belt from the flywheel to the grinder and polisher assembly completes the link to convert a person's exertion into work. To build a pedal powered grinder, all that is required is an exercise bike and an armature with bushing and driveshaft that can be picked up at a local hardware store. Hooking these two devices up is the fun part and will require some inventiveness on the part of the builder.

The pedal power sander is currently just a design, although we have built a pedal power table saw of similar design with no difficulties. To build either the table saw or a sander, this design will do the trick.
