Program of Study

The certificate program consists of five courses for at least 12 units of graduate academic credit. Entering the program requires formal admission to the university as a graduate student plus an approved plan of study and application for certificate of study. After consulting with your graduate advisor and under the advisement of the College Faculty Preparation Program Coordinator, each student develops a plan of study that can be tailored to meet his/her specific timelines and professional goals. The CFPP Coordinator and the Dean for Research and Graduate Studies must approve each student’s plan of study. Notation of certificate completion will appear on your official university transcript. The plan of study must include each of the following four components:

1. Discipline-specific teaching methods.

After consulting with your graduate advisor, select one or more graduate pedagogy courses/mentored experiences taught by the appropriate academic department.
This first component introduces students to undergraduate teaching through a practical presentation of the processes and issues involved in classroom or laboratory instruction. See table below.

2. Higher education teaching methods.

This course is a methods course that guides the student in the skills and knowledge relevant to teaching in higher education. Three units taken first or second semester of MA/MS program: EDUC. 583 Teaching in Higher Education (3 units).

3. Mentored Internship and Higher Education Seminar

Choose either the Community College Track, where you apply for an internship
at College of the Redwoods (or another institutional sponsor) or the Pre-doctoral track, where you apply for an internship at HSU. See the table above for the course to enroll in in your discipline. At the same time, enroll in SP 684 (1 unit), a seminar that investigates the function and role of post-secondary educational institutions.

4. Higher Education Capstone

This graduate seminar focuses on 1) instruction and emerging technologies, and 2) developing a professional teaching portfolio to accompany the teaching certificate.SP 685 Instructional Resources
