The California Forest Soils Council is organized to encourage a more widespread understanding that the soil is the basis for production of forest wealth -- timber, forage, water, wildlife and recreation values.
The California Forest Soils Council meets twice each year. A field tour is held during the summer to discuss a particular region or a particular theme. These meetings are characterized by a varied and free-flowing exchange of scientific ideas and experiences concerning management of forest soils. Foresters and soil scientists exchange ideas with land managers, students, planners, conservationists and other interested people. The winter meeting is usually a technical session about a particular theme. Invited speakers describe current thinking or data about the theme.
By nature the Council is informal and oriented to factual, science-based problem solving and education. Camaraderie and respectful dialogue are also hallmarks of the Council.
The California Forest Soils Council was organized in 1981. Our field tours have visited the southern Sierra, the southern Cascades, Mt. Shasta, the Pygmy Forest, Giant Sequoias, redwood forests, Mono Lake Basin and the White Mountains, Lake Tahoe, ski areas, Yosemite, Santa Cruz, Nevada City, Sonora, Auburn, Lake Almanor, Sacramento Valley wood fiber production, Oakland Hills fire area, Lake County, Sierra wildfire recovery, and the east side of the Sierra. Private and public land managers host the field trips and provide information about site history and management goals.
