| What makes the earth spin on its axis? |
I think its spin is a result of the formation of the solar system, when planetesimals accreted to form the Earth. The solar nebula was a gigantic swirling mass. The stuff that formed the Earth was not only moving around the center, but also spinning about its axis. |
| Why does it (the Earth) spin at its present speed? |
Conservation of angular momentum. Its spin rate will change whenever there's a net torque acting on it (the tides contribute to this). Its spin rate has changed slowly over the centuries. |
| Has the spinning speed changed during the history of the earth? |
Yes - the earth is slowing down, and the Moon is getting farther away (by about 3.8 cm per year). Some calculations suggest that the day was only 5 or 6 hours long when the Earth first formed.
