Chemistry at HSU: The year in Review

Editor's Corner

Rich Paselk

For those who have visited before, no your memory hasn't failed you - I have revamped the Newsletter into a new format (May 2004). The previous format was simply too ambitious, and thus turned out to look a bit silly. Time will tell how this new version works out.

In the development of this newsletter I am once again (hopefully for the last time) changing the calendar. Thus this year's newsletter will be based on the academic calendar, ending with Graduation 2003. As a result of this change, the current newsletter focuses mostly on the Spring 2002. Next year's newsletter will thus cover June 2003-May 2004.

Student Notes

Graduation 2003

Seven students graduated 2002-2003 and all attended the Spring 2003 ceremony. Pictured from left to right: Nathan A. Mitchell received the Bachelor of Arts in Chemistry (second degree, B.S. in Cellular and Molecular Biology), while Lance M. Molinaro (Bachelor of Science in Chemistry with an option in Environmental Toxicology), John W. Giraldes (Bachelor of Science in Chemistry), Jessica A. Nielson (Bachelor of Science in Chemistry), Ian Clark (Bachelor of Science in Chemistry), Yumiko Nakatsuka (Bachelor of Science in Chemistry with an option in Environmental Toxicology), and Domenika E. Pcion (Bachelor of Science in Chemistry). Graduation was preceeded by a reception in the Chemistry Department, with food and drink provided by the faculty. Graduates, families and friends showed up for conversation, refreshments, and congratualtions.

Student Presentations/Publications

Three of our students attended the Sixteenth National Conference on Undergraduate Research (NCUR, Spring 2002) with their advisors at the University of Wisconsin, Whitewater and presentated posters: Ian Clark (Joshua R. Smith, advisor) "1,2-Dehydro-benzene,-cyclopentadienyl, and -cyclobutadiene Metal Complexes"; "A computational investigation of the structures and properties of Möbius-twisted molecules: Coronene and the kekulenes revisited"; L. A. Duckworth (Robert W. Zoellner, advisor); "A computational investigation of the structures and properties of derivatives of methylphenidate and cocaine with comparisons to experimental activity data"; M. D. Higdon (Robert W. Zoellner, advisor); "The computational determination of the relative anti-oxidant capabilities of selected phenolic compounds."

Josh Smith took two of his research students to present posters at the Northern California ACS Organic Symposium, San Francisco State University: John Giraldes (Joshua R. Smith, advisor) "A synthetic methodology into the study of É6- benzynemetal complexes" and Matthew Lincoln (Joshua R. Smith, advisor) "Alternate pathways to (cyclobutadiene)tricarbonyliron(0)."

A number of our students also presented at the CNRS Fourth Annual New & Used Poster Session, including: Erin Brown, Ian Clark, John Giraldes, Matthew Lincoln, Jessica Nielson, and Yumiko Nakatsuka

Awards and Scholarships

The Humboldt Women in Chemistry Scholarship was not given this year.

The events of September 11 resulted in the donor being called to active reserve duty, resulting in a temporary loss of funding for this scholarship. The founding donor is interested in continuing this scholarship, dependent on future income.

If you are interested in helping to reactivate this scholarship contact Rich Paselk.

Third Annual Humboldt Chemistry Research Scholarships

Jessica Momb is our first Robert Wallace Scholar. Her proposal involves the regulation of protein expression in Escherichia coli by Autoinducer-1 under the direction of Jeff Schineller. Jessica recieved her award certificate from Jeff following our last seminar of the spring semester, April 29, 2003.
Erin Brown is our Mervin Hanson Scholar for a second year. He is continuing his study of fluorocarbons on surfaces under Bill Golden. Bill presented the award certificate to Erin following our last seminar of the spring semester, April 29, 2003.0

The CRC Freshman Chemistry Award

Each year the publishers of the CRC Handbook of Chemistry and Physics sponsor an award of a free Handbook to the "top" student in Chem 109/110 at HSU. This year Amy Furniss and Kristine Baker were selected as HSU's winners.

The ACS Undergraduate Award in Analytical Chemistry

Each year the American Chemical Society (ACS) sponsors an award for the top analytical chemistry student in our department. The award consists of an honorary membership in the Analytical Division of the ACS and an eight month subscription to Analytical Chemistry, one of the world's leading journals of analytical chemistry.

New Facilities, Equipment, etc.

Molecular Modeling Lab: In the final phase of the NSF-ILI Molecular Modeling grant written by Bob Zoellner and Rich Paselk, a Beowulf cluster computer from PSSC Labs, Inc. has been installed. The dual Athlon PowerWulf cluster computer has one head node and five slave nodes. Each node contains two AMD Athlon 2400XP+ MP processors (2.4 GHz). The nodes are interconnected through a Gbit ethernet switch, and all nodes run RedHat Linux. The processors can operate independently, allowing ten (or eleven) jobs to run simultaneously, or the processors can operate in parallel so that a single job can be run in parallel on from two to ten (or eleven) processors. Currently, Jaguar is running on the cluster; we hope to have Gaussian 03 for Linux and AIMPRO running on them by the end of the summer.

Department sponsored meetings

New & Used Poster Session: The Department once again sponsored this event during the Spring 2003 semester - for more information click this link.

Summer "Semester"

Once again Chemistry offered four courses in the fourth, Summer 2003, year-round session: Chem 107 (Introductory Chemistry), Chem 109 (General Chemistry I), Chem 110 (General Chemistry II) and Chem 328 (Introductory Organic Chemistry). This year we will again run our courses for the first eight weeks (M-Th) of the ten week session. Our experiance last year showed this to be a better learning environment for the students, as well as allowing a bit of vacation time for the faculty

Faculty Notes

Each year the Dean's Office requests a "brag list" of faculty activities outside of the classroom. Some of our faculty are too modest or busy to submit entries, but from glancing at the material below you can see that most of us are reasonably busy!
