CHECK-IN PROCEDURE: Compare the contents of the locker
with the items listed on the equipment list. Circle, on the page,
the names (and when needed for clarity, the sizes) of missing
items. Then carefully inspect the items on hand for defects. Especially
look for cracks in glassware. The rims of glassware and the tips
of pouring lips are frequent sites of damage. Poke the crucible
bottom with a finger to expose hidden cracks. Be sure the case
contains a thermometer and that it is in one piece. Poke the wire
gauze to ascertain whether it is free of cracks and holes. Circle
item names (and sizes) of all defective items on the equipment
list. The following kinds of defects are not serious enough to
cause replacement:
- Rust or corrosion on metal items.
- Damage to the clay cylinders on the wire triangle.
- Brushes that are in less-than-mint condition but are still
intact and usable.
Be careful about what you accept at the start of the course.
Scratched glassware, especially test tubes, should be replaced.
The Chemistry Department does not charge a lab fee. Therefore,
you are responsible for any equipment damaged or broken during
the course. At the end of the course you will be charged for all
missing or defective items. When all questionable items have been
noted on the equipment list, confer with the instructor. After
checking questionable items, the instructor will send you to the
stockroom to obtain replacement items and the combination to the
locker. Matches are no longer used for lighting bunsen burners
but have been replaced by the strikers on the equipment list.
No freebies will be issued by the stockroom after the day of check-in.
After obtaining the locker combination, try it. Inform the instructor
of any difficulties. Keep the locker locked except when you need
access to it. Equipment has a habit of disappearing from open
lockers.
CHECK-OUT PROCEDURE: Remove all equipment from
the locker and place it on top of your bench. Clean and dry all
glassware. Dirty glassware is not acceptable! Scratched test tubes
should be replaced. The Chemistry Department does not charge a
lab fee. Therefore, you are responsible for any equipment damaged
or broken during the course. Place the thermometer beside the
case. Donot leave any items in the locker not on the equipment
list: discard such items or take them with you. Sign out replacements
for all missing or damaged items from the stockroom. Then request
the instructor to inspect your equipment. After the instructor's
approval has been obtained, lock the locker.
BREAKAGE BILLS: Bills for breakage and/or loss are not
mailed out. They will be available for payment at the cashier's
office in the Student Services building the second or third day
of finals week. An itemized list of persons having charges will
be posted on the bulletin board adjacent to the stockroom and
the cashier at the annex will have a list. The administration,
upon receipt of the list will flag the record of each billed individual
and hold up all services.(registration materials, grades, transcripts,
student aid, etc.) until the bill is paid.
