LEADERSHIP POSITIONS

FALL 2003 THROUGH SUMMER 2004-HUMBOLDT STATE UNIVERSITY:

*CHAIR OF THE DEPARTMENT OF JOURNALISM & MASS COMMUNICATION

I handled all administrative duties for this Department that included 8 full-time faculty, two administrative assistants, 12 student workers, and 6 part-time faculty. This was a year-round appointment. During this time, the number of majors grew by more than 10%, and two new interdisciplinary minors were created. Experiential Learning in Ethics and Communication was created with the Philosophy Department, and Docent Studies was created with the History Department. Both of these required considerable effort, including meetings, filings, consensus building, and presentations. I also worked as part of a larger University committee tasked to propose a formal Institute for Environmental Journalism, a joint effort with “Internews”, the largest on-line news service in the world. I organized a presentation to the University and local non-profits, and prepared a sample curriculum that included elements of Philosophy and Environmental Science. Personnel work during this period included Chairing two faculty search committees, and generating a pool of 3 dozen part-time applicants, rank-ordered for curricular expertise. I also handled all departmental course scheduling, personnel files, evaluations, equipment purchases, and grant and lottery requests.

*From FALL 1998 through SUMMER 1999, I had a split 12-month appointment as both a faculty member in the Department of Journalism and Mass Communication and as the Director of News and Public Affairs at campus radio station KHSU-FM. This was a formal responsibility that included oversight for news and public affairs of the radio station. This full-time effort involved production and programming as well as show facilitation and numerous meetings with volunteers and content producers in these areas. I conducted a series of workshops focusing on basic writing, production and announcing skills for all station volunteers engaged in any activity relating to news programming. This was done to both generate new content and upgrade that already being produced. In the Summer of 1999, I was also KHSU-FM Acting General Manager. Although I held this position only briefly, I wrote all state elected representatives urging their collective support of a telecommunication initiative to upgrade station equipment and broadcast signal quality.

FALL 1994 THROUGH SUMMER 1998-VALDOSTA STATE UNIVERSITY

*AREA COORDINATOR (Chair-Equivalent) TELECOMMUNICATION

I handled all administrative duties for this Department, including faculty and student recruitment, schedule planning, course assignments, advising coordination, budgetary matters and equipment servicing. I also authored a successful new degree proposal for the major. Specifically, it was my task to administer a professionally oriented degree program that offered the BFA. This effort involved the oversight of campus radio stations WVVS-the student FM station, and WWET-the National Public Radio and Peach State Public Radio affiliate, as well as VSU-TV channel 12, a 24 hour per day cable channel programmed entirely by my Department. Valdosta State relied upon students in the degree program to produce shows both for on-campus purposes (athletic banquets) and off-campus purposes (weekly high school football coaches shows) as mandated by the office of the President. Both campus radio stations operated 24 hours per day.

All were automated for times that students could not be on-air live. The programming on all three venues was largely produced by students as a part of their coursework. This entire effort was supervised by me, and included direct versight for the campus broadcast venues, including their budgeting and technical needs. Further, it was my duty to negotiate with the local cable system regarding franchise broadcast rights for the University, and serve as Faculty Advisor for WVVS and as General Manager for WWET. I also served on 6 faculty searches during this time, chairing 5 of them, and carried one of the largest undergraduate advising loads at the institution.

This was a considerable organizational effort, involving solicitation, travel, and on-air training for these individual. All readers required editing and complete production packaging including theme music and introductory voice work.

PROFESSIONAL PRODUCTION HIGHLIGHTS

RADIO SERIES: RURAL ACCESS-PROVIDING HEALTH CARE INFORMATION TO FAR NORTHERN CALIFORNIA.

I applied for a grant from the California Endowment for Coverage of Health Care Issues, and was awarded $10,000 to produce 8 episodes of this program. These programs were produced as live town hall/phone-in meetings from all around the county. I conceived of this series as a creative effort to make best use of both a significant broadcast facility and my skills in broadcasting and journalism. A larger service orientation to the region was also a component. To me, doing this constitutes a type of best practice of the craft that is my discipline. I organized the individual topics, secured prestigious guests and experts, and targeted specific towns appropriate to show topics. It was produced in venues from Veterans Hall in Garberville and St. Joseph Hospital in Eureka , to the River Lodge in Fortuna and the Del Norte Senior Center in Crescent City . All of these venues are in far northern California .

"Prescription Drugs"
“Methamphetamine Abuse"
"Trauma/ER Care"
"National Healthcare Policy"
"Healthcare for the Incarcerated"
"Alternative Medicine"
"Bioethics"
"Longevity"

There was also a season one, also produced with a grant from the California Endowment, which I co-wrote. That effort yielded eight programs that were simulcast and co-hosted with KCHO-FM at Chico State University . Such an undertaking was the first of its kind for both stations. Together, we covered the entire top third of California , an area larger than the state of Indiana . Shows were:

" California 's Uninsured & Underinsured"
"HMO Reform"
"Access to Health Care Outside Cities"
"Environmental & Respiratory Illness"

To date, this has been the only such program aired anywhere on National Public Radio dealing exclusively with issues concerning public school teachers. Production included significant guest preparation and much travel.

Co-Reform of Teacher Preparation: The Georgia P-16 Initiative. A digital video production produced for the Georgia Vice Chancellor of Academic Affairs, highlighting this state- mandated postsecondary upgrading. Collaborative production work was quite extensive, including writing and taped comments from the Governor. I was also one of two primary narrators. The tape received limited national distribution through the Pugh Charitable Trust.

Valdosta State University Admissions Video. I wrote, videotaped, edited and narrated this 20-minute recruitment piece for the school that used considerable on-location shots, including aerial footage and many interviews. I planned and produced the entire project.

Humboldt State University Campus Week of Dialogue.
