CMS Project Office

Origins of CMS...
In 1996 the California State University (CSU) realized many of its campuses had outdated information systems. Financial systems were 20 years old; human resources systems were virtually nonexistent; and student administration systems varied from campus to campus. The CSU Executive Council began a 23-campus information systems development in June of 1998 that is now called the Common Management System (CMS) project.

What is CMS?
CMS will integrate the critical administrative functions of human resources, financials, and student services across all 23 CSU campuses plus the Chancellor's Office by the end of 2008. PeopleSoft is providing the comprehensive management software that is being run on a sophisticated network of servers located in a very secure data center in Salt Lake City, managed by Unisys.

Why CMS?
The driving force for CMS has been increasing demands by faculty, staff, and students over the past few years for more timely and accurate information. When CMS is fully implemented there will be a measurable increase in value for both individuals and organizations. Some of the many benefits will include the elimination of redundant data entry, the development of a common reporting framework, and the ability to link data from key functional areas to enable better planning in support of system and university-wide strategic goals. The Chancellor's Office is currently developing benefits measures for Finance, HR, Student Administration and Information Technology.

Faculty, Staff and Student benefit...
Human Resources will significantly improve processes to recruit and retain highly qualified faculty and staff, while all university employees will gain online access to such human resource information as leave credits, year to date deductions, and training plans. Students will gain more timely information on admission and course requirements. They will also have rapid and efficient online access to financial aid information and graduation checks. See CMS Success Stories on the CalState CMS Website and a CMS presentation made by Sonoma State University on November 17, 2003 to the Legislative Analyst Office and Senate Education Committee.

Moving forward...
Humboldt State implemented the core functionality of the PeopleSoft Human Resources 8.0 system November 2003, and the PeopleSoft Finance 8.4 product went live in July, 2004. A PeopleSoft Student Administration system will be implemented by the Fall of 2008.
