College of Natural Resources & Sciences

Greetings,

Dean James HowardWelcome to Humboldt State's College of Natural Resources and Sciences. Over the course of my 30+ years in higher education I have worked on many campuses ranging from large research-oriented universities to small liberal arts colleges. Humboldt State is a truly unique institution. We have nationally recognized programs and outstanding faculty that attract the attention of the National Science Foundation as well as groups studying successful models for undergraduate education in the sciences. This success is partly because of our size. We are large enough to have a healthy mix of allied programs with lots of opportunities to engage our undergraduates in research, yet small enough to provide the one-on-one mentoring that has proven so valuable to our previous graduates.

In addition, we have the most remarkable culture of engaging students that I have observed at any university. Our faculty are committed to their responsibilities not just as educators but as citizens. You become involved at Humboldt State. You learn more than just what is presented in your classrooms because of the many opportunities to expand your education beyond the walls of our science buildings. Our students also learn about their responsibilities to provide society with better prospects for a healthier and more sustainable future.

Commitment and excellence are the terms that best characterize our programs. Students in the College of Natural Resources and Sciences share this tradition of hard work, dedication and commitment. Our students are active participants in the many exciting projects our faculty develop. It represents the best kind of hands-on-learning, and we invite you to join us.
