Knots Seminar
September 21
Outdoor enthusiasts use an assortment of ropes and knots for outdoor skills. Many of these same knots can be useful for a variety of everyday uses, ranging from camping, climbing, sailing, loading vehicles, and more. This seminar will cover various knots including hitches, bends, loops and other important knots. If you would like to have the mystery taken out of knot tying, this class is for you.

Dutch Oven Cooking

With the backpacking season upon us it is the perfect time to enhance your outdoor cooking skills. Explore the versatile world of Dutch Oven cooking with natural fuels such as pinecones or tree bark for enhancing your enjoyment of the outdoors. Instructor Dick Wild has been cooking with Dutch Ovens for over 30 years in both outdoor and urban environments. “With correct use, proper care, a well seasoned oven produces a unique flavor unequaled by any other cooking utensil.” This year’s featured dish will be sour dough whole wheat biscuits, beef Stew dumplings and pineapple upside down cake. Sour dough starters are available, courtesy of Ramones Bakery. Spend the day cooking! Children can attend free with participants and will receive Dutch Oven cooked popcorn.

Basic Bicycle Maintenance and Repair

This course will cover basic bike maintenance including overall condition, drive train, brakes and trail maintenance. By the end of this course you should be able to service and repair your bike both at home and on the road or trail. Participants should bring their bicycle, what tools they have, and wear old clothes.

Map and Compass Seminar
October 5 – 19
Learn the navigational skills needed to interpret and use maps for land navigation. These skills will help you to plan back country trips and navigate over unfamiliar terrain. Topics will cover the basics of topographic maps, route selection and using a map with a compass. This three-session course will be a combination of classroom presentations and practical experience.
Program Fee: $29 HSU Students, $42 All Others
Program Fee Includes: three days of instruction, Map & Compass packet, and optional compass ($10 extra – will be collected on the first day of class.)
