Escrima

<Look for upcoming dates in our Spring 2010 Catalog!

Escrima is a comprehensive Filipino martial art covering weapon and empty hand applications. In the beginning stages, training primarily involves use of a single stick, through which the student learns principles and body mechanics applicable to other weapons (double sticks, short stick, staff, etc.) and empty hand applications. Unlike most other martial arts which focus on technique, Escrima focuses on body mechanics and concepts. The five basic concepts of Escrima are power, speed/distance/timing, focus (mental and physical), transition and balance. Once a student has a basic technical background and can understand and apply the five concepts, they are able to use any weapon with some degree of proficiency. All of the weapon movements may also be done as empty hand applications.

The Taoist (Daoist) Warrior: Tai Ji Tui Shou (T’ai Chi Push Hands)

Option I: September 9 – October 14
Option II: October 21 – December 9

To practice Tai Ji Quan is to practice Daoism. It is to follow the path of the Daoist Warrior: powerful yet tolerant, peaceful yet capable. While the final goal of Tai Ji Quan, like any other martial art, is combat, the ultimate goal of Daoism is self-improvement, inner peace, tolerance, experiential understanding, and wisdom. Tai Ji Quan teaches us to use softness and yielding to redirect and utilize that which comes at us. It teaches us non-violence, but like Daoism it is not pacifist. “[The good General] fulfills his purpose, but only as a step that could not be avoided.” – Dao De Jing, Chapter 30.
“The martial path of Tai Ji begins with Push Hands.” In this class we train the body in xing (form) to facilitate the training of yi (intention), which will sharpen as we work to deepen our awareness and equanimity. Eventually, Qi (Chi), led by the yi, will naturally replace li (physical strength) in our movements. This process moves the practitioner towards being a stronger, healthier, more peaceful, balanced, and capable person.
This course is guided by sayings drawn from Dao De Jing, Tai Ji classic works, and Chinese culture. Practice will consist primarily of highly repetitive, meditative, low-impact physical movements, as well as Qi Gong, “Pair Work”, and the occasional lecture. No experience necessary.
