Formed in 1946, Conservation Unlimited is the oldest student-run club at Humboldt State University. We are the Humboldt State Student Chapter of The Wildlife Society. We serve primarily as a Wildlife club, but welcome all others! Our main interest is serving our members through open dialog and contact between students, professors, professionals in the field, and community members. Our goal is to promote education, service, career development, research, and dialog for students interested in biology & natural resource conservation Note: conservation is not the same as preservation (although it may not be exclusive thereof!)
We promote our goal through student-organized and run workshops and classes that highlight many of the skills we will need as professional wildlife biologists. Many of our workshops and classes augment skills learned in the classroom, as well as offer a more in-depth opportunity for exploration and practical application of those skills. Some examples of workshops offered this semester are a Bird Banding workshop, Map & Compass workshop, First Aid Training, and a Women's shotgun workshop
Another aspect of our club is organizing a Lecture series that invites professionals, professors, grad students, and undergrad students to present presentations in a professional setting. This not only exposes the students to attending lectures, but it gives students a chance to learn what is expected during a presentation, and it exposes them to some of the cutting-edge research that is taking place.
Conservation Unlimited also serves as a way for wildlife students to meet other like-minded students. We host several barbeques and gatherings througout the semester, have bowling nights, camping trips, day trips and hikes, and other activities that help create lasting friendships. Many of our students are very active outdoor enthusists and welcome the opportunity to expose and teach their fellow students to new and exciting pasttimes.
