My internet is not working, what can I do?
First you have to determine if it is the website you are trying to visit that is not working, or if it is the entire web. Try a few different websites. If none of them work, are other people around you having the same problem? If they are it could be a network outage and not your computer. If it’s a network outage, you should contact Telecom at x5000 to report network problems. If the problem is local to your machine, check to see if the internet cable is plugged in. It is usually green cable that looks much like a phone cable but much larger. Make sure it is plugged in at your computer and at the wall. If it is and you still have problems, call Dave x5874.
How can I burn a CD/DVD?
First determine that you can burn CD’s and/or DVD’s, the CD player on your computer will need say such things as Compact Disc RW, DVD RW, etc. If it says CD RW, but only DVD-ROM then you can burn CD’s but only read DVD’s. Next insert a blank writable CD or DVD into the recorder. Next find the files or folders you want to copy to the CD. Move them onto the CD Drive in My Computer. Next double click on the CD recording drive. Windows displays a temporary area where the files are held before they are copied to the CD. Check that the files and folders that you intend to copy to the CD are displayed under Files Ready to Be Written to the CD. Under CD Writing Tasks, click Write to CD. After the CD Writing Wizard starts, follow the instructions in the wizard. You may also have CD burning software loaded on the computer and can you that instead of the built in Windows software.

When I try to turn on my computer, nothing happens. The power light is not on. What can I do?
Make certain that your computer power cord is snugly plugged in - both to the computer and to a power source. Check the switch on the computer's power supply to ensure that it is in the "On" position. If you are using a surge protector or UPS, make certain that the device is on and that the status indicator light, if any, is green. Temporarily bypass the surge protector or UPS and connect the computer directly to a wall receptacle. If, after checking that you have power to the computer, you find that you still have no lights, your power supply is the likely culprit. Contact Dave at x5874.
I hear a loud, clicking sound when my computer is running and it is starting to lock up on me. What's happening?
A loud, clicking sound and lockups are signs of imminent, physical failure of the hard drive. If you don't have your files backed up, try to do that immediately, since the hard drive may fail completely at any moment. If the hard drive fails completely, your files are irretrievably lost. The drive may work for a while before failing completely, but it is imperative at the first signs of trouble you contact me immediately to get it taken care of.
How do I get my computer connected to the internet?
If it is a State owned computer, it should already be able to connect to the internet on campus. If it is a personal laptop you brought from home, you will have to contact me to get it registered to work on the wired network. For the wireless network, you must download and run the CSA program from the webpage that opens when you try to get on the web. This program scans your computer and makes sure its up to date on patches and anti virus. If you pass the program will allow you to connect to wireless untill we "up the bar" so to speak. Then you will have to download and run the program again. We usually "up the bar" before every semester. If you do not pass, you will recieve a message saying so, and you will be allowed to update your OS or antivirus, and then you must run the scan again.
