Every year the Native Children's Authors
Festival tries to see as many kids as possible through out Humboldt
& Del Norte Counties.
The first year the authors were able to attend a half a day at both
Loletta and Trinidad Elementary schools and visit the Trinidad and Table
Bluff libraries.
The Second year the authors were split in two's and taken to two
different schools. Carolyn Dunn and Cynthia Leitch-Smith presented
at Margaret Keating Elementary school in Klamath. Leaving the
hotel at 8 am, traveling for an hour, then presenting to classes until
school let out at 2:30pm. The other two authors, Gayle Ross and
Shaunna McCovey attended Hoopa Valley Elementary and High schools.
They left Arcata at 8 am, traveled for an hour and then presented to
over 400 students between the hours of 9am and 3:30pm. Shaunna and Gayle
were hosted to a lunch provided by the Indian Education Center and the
Hoopa Elementary school Librarian, and Gayle was invited to a puppet
show hosted by the 3rd grade class. After the Elementary School was
dismissed to go home, the authors trotted across to Hoopa High were they
spoke to three classes of high school students. Just as they
sighed a sigh of relief and thought they'd get to go home for the night,
the were whisked off to be interviewed by K.I.D.E (the first Native run
& owned Radio Station in California) for an hour interview. At
6pm they were finally able to go back to their rooms and relax for the
night.
This year our Authors will be visiting the following schools. The itineraries
have not been finalized as of yet, and I will post them as soon as I
can.
