2nd Annual Professional Development Day on Diversity
With over 160 staff and faculty attending from across campus, the 2009 Professional Development Day on Diversity highlighted a keynote address from national expert on diversity in higher education, Dr. Daryl Smith. Smith presented a comprehensive framework for institutionalizing diversity that focused around the centrality of using intelligent metrics to guide and inform this process. Her workshop that followed elaborated on these ideas.
Other workshops offered challenged participants to consider the relationship between advising, mentoring and student success, in both individual and collective efforts to reach our stated goal of truly "inclusive excellence":
- The "Appreciative Advising" Revolution - presented by Christina Klefeker, Miami University
- Improved Advising and Education of Students with Disabilities: Shifting from Accommodation to Accessibility - presented by Dr. Brett Christie, Sonoma State University, with a HSU student panel
- Making Connections: Expanding the Notion of Advising to Improve the Student Educational Experience - presented by HSU "Best Practices" panel: Joy Adams (Geography), Susan Marshall (Forestry & Wildland Resources), Sheila Steinberg (Sociology), and Ronnie Swartz (Social Work)
1st Annual Professional Development Day on Diversity
Centered around a keynote address by diversity strategy expert Yuri Brown, the 1st annual Professional Development Day on Diversity brought staff and faculty together to consider the role of each member of this campus in preparing for globalization and a diverse workforce, the subject of Brown's keynote address.
Workshops introduced the campus to methods and techniques for creating a campus environment that is aware of, sensitive to and conversant with cultural and other forms of diversity:
- Creating and Sustaining a Diverse Student Body in Math, Science, and Engineering: A View from the Heartland - presented by Dr. Phil Kutzko, University of Iowa
- Creating Culturally Relevant Programs: Graduate Student Recommendations for Educators and Staff - presented by Dr. Lisa William-White
- Techniques to Make the Campus Accessible for Students & Staff with Disabilities - presented by Deborah Kaplan, J.D., CSU Chancellor's Office
- Communication when Cultural Conflicts Arise -presented by Vincent Feliz, HSU Counselor & Marylyn Paik-Nicely, HSU MultiCultural Center
