Hi. My name is Michelle Locke and I am a reporter for the Associated Press.
If you are reading this before 5-15, I've got a question on how to
interpret figures from your economic index. I'm looking for a graph
explaining the role of lumber in Humboldt County's economy.
Thanks.

Thank you for specific information on the local gasoline price
situation. In my opinion, you state the information very clearly. If
anything though, you give local gasoline wholesalers and retailers a
huge amount of slack. If a station like Hansens in Fortuna can undercut
gasoline in Eureka by a whopping 24 cents a gallon (as of 11/29/02), how
can there be anything but collusion and greed in the local gasoline
market place? If it costs 4-12 cents to ship fuel here, why are we 25
cents higher than Redding and Willits? What are the specific factors
limiting competition here? Could the wholesalers actually be using price
manipulation to smother any local competition?
I think that this situation would make for a fascinating research
project, and that the impact on our local economy in terms of lost
tourism will prove increasingly important. Once again thank you for the
information, and keep up the good work.

Love your website, as it provides terrific information for my various writing projects.
I just noticed a common error that I wanted to pass on: you report electricity consumption
in kilowatts, but the correct measurement unit is kilowatt-hour, or kwh, 1,000 watts
consumed for one hour.

Your economic analysis is very helpful for local business and real estate to get a
picture of what is happening in Humboldt County. However, comments like "saving
capitalism from the capitalists" and "forcing President bush" reflect a continuing
bias by the educational elite who use the classroom as a propaganda platform instead
of a place to build thoughtful citizens. The recent energy problems in California
demonstate how a government managed economy in a free market world results more harm
than good.

I enjoyed reading your economic analysis of Humboldt County. Does someone in your
department follow economic trends in Del Norte County?
