| California's
north coast is well known for its' scenic coastline and giant coastal
redwoods. Within this dramatic backdrop, diverse ecosystems support a
living composite of native plants and wildlife. An impressive variety of
state and national parks, wildlife refuges and other protected natural
areas offer the visitor ample opportunity to study, admire, and enjoy
these unique coastal ecosystems.
This guide introduces the traveler to four major ecosystems, identifies significant species of plants and animals which inhabit these ecosystems, and Locates publicly-accessible natural areas where the ecosystem can be observed and experienced Protected Natural Area Map:
The Institute for Ecological Tourism, at Humboldt State University, promotes wise stewardship of natural and cultural resources through carefully planned and executed tourism development which emphasizes education and research while assuring minimal impact on the area's natural and cultural resources.
