Collaborative Inquiry, also known as Collaborative Action Research, can have the following goals as identified by Raymond, Rafferty & Dutt (1996):

  • To bridge the gap between universities and schools
  • To provide opportunities for teacher enhancement
  • To stimulate classroom reform
  • To enhance the professional status of teaching
  • To improve teaching and learning
  • To generate theory and knowledge

Each Collaborative Inquiry Proposal should address the following items:

  1. Names and contact information for the Collaborative Inquiry team that must be comprised of one or more Humboldt State University faculty members and one or more public school teachers, administrators, or counselors. [Projects that involve faculty from the public schools, Humboldt State University’s School of Education, and one or more of Humboldt State University's academic departments will receive special consideration.]
  2. Description of the project focus/inquiry question with projected timeline, data gathering, and analysis plan.
  3. Explanation of the significance of the project focus/inquiry question and how it will benefit both the school and the university.
  4. Description of the plan to disseminate findings to both university and school colleagues and students. Upon project completion each team will submit a written report to the Center’s Director and will also be encouraged to share findings through the Education Colloquium series, the North Coast Education Summit, the Center’s newsletter/web site, and other dissemination venues.
  5. Projected budget (maximum funding per project will be $750). Upon project completion, grant recipients will submit a brief report documenting the project and accounting for expenditures. Although money cannot be designated for travel or for stipends for the Collaborative Inquiry project members, a range of other possibilities could include:
    • duplication of materials
    • purchase of books or other project-related materials
    • refreshments to sustain Collaborative Inquiry team members as they work on the project
    • transcription of audiotapes used to collect interview data
    • hiring substitute teachers to release public school Collaborative Inquiry team members to work on the project
  6. Complete and attach a Human Subjects Form (a new browser window will open). Most likely you’ll only need the Expedited Form. For successful proposals, funding will be released after Institutional Review Board approval.

Usually one to two Collaborative Inquiry Projects can be funded in each cycle up to $750 each. Awardees will need to keep receipts for reimbursement for project expenses. Additional information about the proposal process, evaluation criteria, human subjects, and reimbursement is located below.

Be sure to attach a completed Human Subjects Form. We will submit your form to Humboldt State's Institutional Review Board (IRB) as part of our screening process.
