East Bay Conservation Corps

Dr. Patty Yancey, program leader for the Elementary Education Program (EED) developed a new partnership with the East Bay Conservation Corps (EBCC).

This exciting program involved eight EED credential students as teacher interns at EBCC in Oakland during 2005-2006. In subsequent years the program has and continues to involve credential interns at EBCC, Hoopa Elementary, and Crescent City. Through development of a distributed learning model the credential interns will work full time at the school and still be able to complete their credential coursework through Humboldt State University.

If you’d like more information on this new program, please contact Patty Yancey at py4@humboldt.edu.

Fortuna Union High School District (FUHSD)

Since Fall 2003 the Secondary Education (SED) Program at HSU and Fortuna Union High School District (FUHSD) have collaborated to improve teaching and learning at both the school and the university. Dr. Keri Gelenian, a professor in the SED Program has taught his SED course at the school and supervised numerous student teachers at the site.

Starting Fall 2005 a new FUHSD Redwood Academy opened at the College of the Redwoods with Keri as new principal of this “early college high school.” Please contact Keri Gelenian (kg5@humboldt.edu) for additional information.

Klamath Trinity Joint Unified School District (KTJUSD)

Since 2001 KTJUSD has been in partnership with HSU and the Center for Educational Excellence, Collaboration & Inquiry funded through the California Academic Partnership Program (CAPP).

This CSU-funded initiative has supported project activities which provide ongoing professional development to KTJUSD teachers so that they are better equipped to support their students’ success on the California High School Exit Exam (CAHSEE). During the first three years of the project both the Redwood Area Math Project and the Redwood Writing Project assisted with professional development activities.

As a result of several additional years of funding, the district has maintained an emphasis on standards-based, backwards-mapping curriculum development in grades 6-12.

The project is directed by a leadership team primarily comprised of teachers. In additon to preparing students for the CAHSEE, activities also include college visitations, an emphasis on A-G coursework, and preparing student to attend the college of their choice. For more information contact Amanda Platt (aim1621@yahoo.com) or Vicki Kurtz (coachvk@hotmail.com) at Hoopa Valley High School or Cathleen Rafferty at cdr11@humboldt.edu.

Liberal Studies Elementary Education (LSEE) and Local Schools

The Liberal Studies Elementary Education (LSEE) Program is a pathway into a multiple subject credential program. A program objective is to provide extensive and meaningful field experiences designed to acquaint the prospective teacher with a full understanding of the responsibilities and professional duties of an elementary school teacher.

The LSEE program has a dynamic new partnership with several local elementary schools. In order to provide prospective teachers with more opportunities to connect theory with practice, the LSEE students are spending substantive amounts of time working with teachers and students in local classrooms prior to their credential year and student teaching experience.

Fieldwork observations are offered in mathematics, social studies, science and reading/literacy. Students observe specific instruction in these subject areas at local schools.

Both Jacoby Creek and Fieldbrook schools have been participating in the field experiences with course work offered in the newly redesigned LSEE program at HSU.

The River School

A Charter School Grades Six through Eight – in Partnership with Humboldt State University

In 2007-08, the Secondary Education (SED) Program at Humboldt State University and the River School formed a very exciting partnership that will allow students to enroll through HSU and complete their credential year in Napa at the River School. Students enrolled in this program will be in classrooms at the River School from opening day at the school.

Classes for HSU will be taken at the River School, as intensive courses at HSU, and through video-conferencing between HSU and the River School. We have formed this partnership in order to provide student teachers with the opportunity to do much of their learning on-site at a school whose philosophy aligns well with that of the SED Program, to extend the outreach of the SED Program beyond its local service area, and to provide the River School with high quality credential candidates.

About the Secondary Education Program

We are committed to the act of teaching as being one of social activism and promotion of social justice. We see teachers as being agents of social change. We are aware that prospective teachers may perceive a disconnect between the philosophy of education in some public school systems and that which we profess, and we see it as part of our mission to assist our students in their development so that they are able to take their place in those systems as thoughtful and sensitive agents of change, constantly working to bridge, narrow, and eventually close the gap between what they experience in schools and what they believe.

About the River School

Our purpose is to educate sixth, seventh, and eighth grade students to be responsible, respectful self-motivated learners who make positive contributions to their communities. We will accomplish this with the collaboration of teachers, parents and students who provide a nurturing learning environment that emphasizes academic competence, creative expression, and personal and social responsibility and models the values we want our students to learn.

If you are interested in completing your credential year at the River School in ’07-08 via HSU, please contact Ann Diver-Stamnes (acd1@humboldt.edu) or at 707-826-5822.
