Session V-3 (Saturday, March 3 @ 9:00 – 12:00)
Community Rights v. Corporate Rights: Building a Democracy Movement in the United States
Corporations do not merely exercise power, they literally rule over us. Unelected and unaccountable corporate CEOs act as de-facto government, making critical public policy decisions behind closed and locked doors. Although current law legitimizes and protects corporate decision-making authority, a “new paradigm” activism is taking root designed to undermine the legal doctrines that protect the property rights of the elite class rather than the human rights of ordinary people. We will explore real world examples of people actively asking the question—Who will rule this country? Special emphasis will be placed on exciting developments in Latin America, the concept of "Corporate Personhood" and successful campaigns in the U.S. that are challenging corporate power.
