Been There, Done That, Bought the T-shirt and Sold It at a Yard Sale
Does the title sound like you, sometimes, concerning workshops on social justice or leadership issues?  Regardless of your answer, this experiential (hands-on) workshop is designed to fully engage participants in learning how to address issues that arise in diverse environments.  You are invited to explore strategies from various perspectives through a blending of activities and dialogue.  Participants will consider new ways to: 1) transform approaches to their personal leadership behaviors and their college practices, 2) develop flexibility to work effectively with the myriad aspects of culture, and 3) intervene in culturally offensive situations. This workshop will particularly benefit those who work with dynamic diverse communities or groups, administrators, educators and social service professionals.

School Board Activism: The Importance of Social Justice Issues in the Role and Responsibilites of a School Board Trustee.  An Active Discussion of Issues and Solutions Facilitated by Recently Elected Local High School District Board Members Kathy Marshall and Shane Brinton
Service as a school board member is often seen as symbolic and passive, rather than as the vital, proactive and creative service it can actually be.  Much of a school board’s roles and responsibilities are institutionally determined by governmental mandates and pre-determined public-funding schemes.  However, a school board’s role in setting the tone in which education is provided and in requiring concrete action on social justice issues is neither governmentally institutionalized nor commonly acknowledged or practiced.  Issues such as military recruitment on high school campuses; the automatic release of students’ directory information to the military; insidious, often unidentified, gender discrimination; adequate sexual education; and the growing prevalence of obesity are just a few social justice issues that affect the lives of high school students, their parents, their educational community and the larger communities in which they reside.  Come discuss the significance of these issues to our students and learn what each of us can do to make sure these and other issues are neither ignored nor forgotten by school boards, administrators and the entire school community.  Whether your interest is in serving as a school board member, or simply being an active parent, student and/or community member addressing social justice issues in the school setting is essential and you can learn to have a positive impact.

From the Panther to the Thug :  Old to Young Tales of Wisdom and Change
This workshop will focus on the transition from the political fight for justice and equity to the street-striving goals of the youth. From the community to the individual, we will discuss and explore through puzzles and games how the gap between our civil rights grandparents and our gang- involved selves has been created and sustained. Open to all especially those interested in bridging the communication gap between the elders and the youth.
Presenter:  Paris B. Adkins

All Rights are Human Rights:  Bringing International Human Rights Law into our Teaching, Organizing, and advocacy for Social Justice
We are at a moment in our nation's history, especially in light of post 9/11 policies, when we need to reach beyond the borders of our own political and justice systems to global human rights movements and laws, in order to achieve social justice. This workshop will look at our domestic social and political issues through the prism of international human rights. It will present an overview of international human rights covenants and conventions, and map how human rights have been part of social justice movements in the United States throughout our history.  We will look at ways to use international human rights law in our organizing, advocacy and teaching.
