Humboldt State University College of Professional Studies
  North Coast Education Summit
Visitor Information

Humboldt State University is located in the town of Arcata, about 275 miles north of San Francisco. This small college town is situated directly north of Eureka, on the coast of California. Our area is primarily rural but the Eureka-Arcata area offers many of the amenities of urban life. Our area has a reputation for progressive political activism, environmental leadership, and strong rural schools and this part of California is home to a large number of Native American tribes.

This year's summit will include field trip opportunities to the Arcata Marsh, H.S.U. Natural History Museum, Campus Center for Appropriate Technology (CCAT), and a special Native American Curriculum Resource Center, as well as several local schools!

Please try to grab an extra day or two to enjoy the tremendous beauty of the area, engage in hiking or beach walks, and tour our entire campus. Be sure to visit Old Town Eureka, the Arcata Plaza, the North Coast Food Cooperative, and the beautiful small towns in our area. If you'd like to receive information on the area, contact the Arcata Chamber of Commerce at (707) 822-3619, the Eureka Chamber of Commerce at (707) 442-3738, or the Humboldt County Convention and Visitors' Bureau at (707) 443-5097.

Transportation

  • By Air: The Arcata-Eureka Airport is located just five miles from the Humboldt State University campus in McKinleyville, just north of the town of Arcata. It is serviced by United Express and Horizon airlines. Please make your air reservations in advance as flights are limited, usually on small planes (30 passengers) and may fill up quickly. Also, fog and rainy weather often delay or cancel flights, so give yourself plenty of time to get here. Car rentals are available at the airport but should be reserved in advance.
  • By Car: We are easy to reach as Humboldt State University is located adjacent to Highway 101 about nine miles north of Eureka. You'll see exit signs on the highway and additional signs lead you to our lovely campus. The summit office each day will be in the Green and Gold Room in Founders Hall, the building that sits atop a hill overlooking the rest of the campus.

Weather Possibilities

Last year's summit took place during the same weekend and we had three beautiful days of warmth and sunshine. This is not typical of our area in the winter. Check weather reports for Eureka, but consider bringing an umbrella and wearing layered clothing as the nights up can get quite cool!
