Minor in Education

The minor can be taken in conjunction with any major degree program!

The Minor in Education provides an overview of the field of education and offers opportunities for students to learn more about teaching and other careers in education during their undergraduate years.

Students who have already chosen teaching as a career may elect to complete the Minor in Education, thus assisting them in preparing for the fifth year credential program. This is not, however, the primary impetus for the creation of the Minor. Students who are not interested in teaching as a career may elect to complete the Minor in Education as excellent preparation for other careers where skills related to teaching, classroom management and the creation of learning communities are increasingly in demand; business, nursing, sociology, psychology, public administration, recreation, social work, coaching, and community organizing. We also believe some students will find that the Minor in Education inspires them to become K-12 teachers.

The Minor in Education also will serve to assist students who may not be considering careers related to education, yet are seeking a foundational understanding of educational issues for future roles as parents and as citizens and taxpayers during an era where education increasingly is considered the central public service provided by local and state governments.

A minor is similar to a major but less comprehensive. Although a minor is not required for graduation, many students find that a minor complements their studies and enhances their career opportunities. A minimum 3.0 (B) grade-point average is required for all courses in the minor. Courses comprising the minor may also fulfill some general education or major requirements. Although minors are posted on the HSU transcript, they are not listed on the diploma. A minor cannot be posted if completed after the degree has been awarded. It must be completed in conjunction with a degree or credential program. Six units in the minor must be upper division. Students must complete a minimum of 14 units meeting all requirements to receive a minor in education.
