Scholarships & Financial Aid

HSU Credential Program Scholarships
Please note: The scholarships offered and their dollar amounts may vary from year to year due to funding. Scholarship awards are contingent upon acceptance to the credential program listed with full-time student status. All applicants must have a minimum 2.67+ overall GPA or at least a 2.75 GPA for the last 60 semester units to be considered. Most require recipient to be a U.S. Citizen.
California Retired Teachers’ Association:
- Amount: $1,000
- Who can apply: EED, SED, and SPED candidates.
- Selection criteria: Based solely on financial need. Preference is given to students who graduated from a high school in Humboldt or Del Norte counties or the Klamath-Trinity Joint Unified School District.

Frank and Myrtle Fick Memorial Scholarship
- Amount: Approx. $600
- Who can apply: EED, SED, and SPED candidates with a degree from a public university. Generally, one award is given to an EED candidate, one to a SED candidate, one to a SPED mild/moderate candidate, and one to a SPED moderate/severe candidate.
- Selection criteria: Recipient selected based on commitment to teaching profession, academic performance, and financial need.

Ben and Chris Hawkins Education Scholarship
- Amount: $500
- Who can apply: Scholarship rotates year to year. In 2009-2010, it will be awarded to a SED candidate. In 2010-2011 it will go to EED, and in 2011-2012, it will be awarded to SPED.
- Selection criteria: Requires minimum 3.5 GPA and financial need. Preference will be given to students enrolled in a credential program following five or more years since earning their baccalaureate.

Alison Miles Memorial Scholarship
- Amount: $500
- Who can apply: SED candidates who have a student teaching placement at a middle school.
- Selection criteria: Potential to become an excellent middle school teacher. Financial need also considered.
- Contact the Credential Programs Office, located in HGH 202, 707-826-5867, or see our website. Scholarship offering generally announced in fall of the credential program year.
- Amount: $1,000.
- Who can apply: SED and EED candidates
- Selection criteria: Specifically designated for students who earned their high school diploma or equivalency 15 or more years ago. Financial need is also considered.

Laura E. Settle California Retired Teachers’ Association Scholarship
- Amount: $2,000
- Who can apply: Scholarship rotates year to year. It will be awarded to SPED in 2009-2010, SED in 2010-2011, EED in 2011-2012.
- Selection criteria:
- *Average to high scholastic standing.
- *Record of exemplary character and citizenship.
- *Financial need, as established by the School of Education.
- *Citizen of the United States and resident of California.

Mark Sheive Memorial Scholarship
- Amount: Approx. $1,500.
- Who can apply: EED candidates
- Selection criteria: Preference given to HSU graduates with Liberal Studies Elementary Education or Liberal Studies Child Development majors. Academic merit, potential to become an excellent teacher, and financial need all are considered.

Charles and Helen Schober Scholarship
- Amount: Dollar amount varies, usually between $500-$1000.
- Who may apply: EED, SED, and SPED credential candidates. One or more awards are generally given to applicants in each of the programs.
- Selection criteria: Financial need, letters of recommendation, and overall potential to become an excellent teacher are all considered.

- American Association of University Women: Offers a variety of scholarships/grants for women in higher education. See their website at http://www.aauw.org/fga/index.cfm for a list of programs and qualifications.
- PELL: for credential students who have completed their bachelor's degree and are enrolled in a credential program; contact Financial Aid, (707)-826-5363.
- Cal Grant T: a competitive grant with specific teaching requirements for students who have never received a Cal Grant or are no longer eligible for a 5th year renewal. Contact Financial Aid Office or the California Student Aid Commission.
Student Loan Forgiveness Programs:
- APLE: Will pay back up to $19,000 of your student loans. Amounts vary based on your specialty and future teaching employment. For further information, see: http://www.csusuccess.org/aple.
- Stafford Loan Forgiveness Program for Teachers: Will pay back up to $17,500 for teachers with certain specialties and up to $5,000 for teachers who teach for five years in low-income schools. Must meet program requirements, see website for details: http://www.FederalStudentAid.ed.gov/tc
