English Single Subjects Major

Major Requirements

This major prepares students for the single subject teaching credential in English to teach at the secondary level in the public schools.

Humboldt's English major offers the advantage of close personal attention to individual needs from four faculty who have a total of 27 years teaching at the K-12 levels.

Our teacher preparation major includes core courses in common with the regular English major but provides additional emphasis in language and composition studies and in the interpretation and teaching of literature appropriate for a student preparing to teach in a secondary school setting. Also, a student can complete the major by pursuing one of a number of optional pathways, other than English, including Creative Writing and Crosscultural Language and Academic Development ("CLAD"). Once the core classes are completed, a student arranges with her advisor to complete the above alternative pathways.

Before applying to the single subject program, the candidate must meet the prerequisite of 45 hours of early field experience or enroll in TPSS 210.

If considering a State-of-California alternative to enter the fifth year, a graduate candidate can waive all courses in these undergraduate pathways by passing the Praxis II Series examinations. However, to be admitted to the Humboldt Teacher Preparation program, the candidate must satisfy ten upper division courses in the core program, identified by the advisor.

Applying for Teacher Preparation

To apply for the fifth year, a student who completed or nearly completed the major or passed the Praxis II, can enter the graduate teacher preparation (even though she has not earned a B.A.) by satisfying the Subject Matter Competency Assessment ("SMCA"). This assessment requires students to enroll in English 500 in spring semester prior to the fifth year.
