Background:

I've spent over a decade in applied research and teaching Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and remote sensing. I've been involved extensively in the development and teaching of GIS and remote sensing courses in both the university and professional development arenas. I joined the faculty at Humboldt State in the fall of 1998 where I teach a variety of course in geospatial analysis, including GIS, GPS and remote sensing.

I also serve as the Director of the Humboldt State University Institute for Spatial analysis (ISA) was established in April 2006 as a focal point for the advancement of spatial research, innovation and application. The ISA is dedicated to the expansion of spatial analysis methodologies across disciplines and the full spectrum of real world issues. We work closely with governmental, public and private sector entities to achieve this goal.

In 2004, I was selected as a Fulbright Scholar and appointed as Distinguished Chair of Airborne Remote Sensing at the Centre for Scientific Computing, Simon Fraser University in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada where I spent seven months working with colleagues on methods for aerial imaging and analysis of coastal ecosystems. In the fall of 2008 I was appointed as a Fulbright Senior Scholar in the International Master's Degree Programme in Geoinformatics (GIMP) and invited to teach a five week course titled "GIS modelling in the Social and Environmental Sciences" at the University of Helsinki, Finland.

In recent years I have researched and presented extensively on the application of geospatial analysis technologies for modeling and visualization in both natural and human environments. I have also published a wide range of range of papers, book chapters and a book, GIS for the Social Sciences: Investigating Space and Place co authored with Dr. Sheila Lakshmi Steinberg.

Specialty Area:

Geospatial Analysis and Modeling

Courses Taught

Dr.Steinberg's courses are listed on his web page.

Education/degrees:

  • Ph.D., Forestry, University of Minnesota, St. Paul, MN.
  • M.S., Natural Resources, University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, MI.
  • Graduate Certificate, Remote Sensing, University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, MI.
  • B.S. Natural Resources, Kent State University, Kent, OH.

Research Interests:

My research focuses on the application of geospatial techniques in a variety of environmental modeling and analysis applications ranging from terrestrial and watershed processes to marine systems and habitat modeling for a variety of flora and fauna. In recent years I have begus to explore ways to extend these approaches into the human realm, including exploration of the interactions between humans and their environment. Recent work includes examining pesticide exposure in farmworkers and their communities and economic development with consideration of the environmental and social context of rural communities.
