Summer Bridge Resident Mentors
Summer Bridge Resident Mentors (RM): Duties include supervising, advising and acting as role models and leaders for new program students. Resident Mentors are expected to maintain good working relationships with staff, campus authorities, and each other. RM's live on campus during the Summer Bridge program with a group of approximately 100 incoming EOP/SSS students. They help organize, facilitate, and supervise recreational and academic activities.
Fall Bridge Tutor: Duties include attending Fall Bridge courses with program students, attending weekly staff meetings, monitoring student progress, and facilitating weekly/bi-weekly study groups. Tutors assist students with writing and reading assignments and provide individual and group tutorial assistance. Tutors are expected to maintain a good working relationship with instructors, staff, and students. Duties may require evening and weekend hours.
Peer Mentors are assigned a group of 5 to 9 mentees. Peer mentors facilitate weekly meetings with their mentees and lead informal discussions on pre-assigned topics. Mentors monitor the progress of their students in their classes during the first semester. Mentors occasionally help coordinate and participate in recreational activities for the Mentoring and Fall Bridge programs.
EOP/SSS Student Admissions Assistant: Duties include filing, processing EOP application materials, stuffing envelopes, photo copying CSU applications, answering phones, and entering data. The required work skills include the ability to work independently, to learn new information quickly, and to follow complex directions; familiarity with office protocol including confidentiality, punctuality, professionalism; strong alphabetizing and computer typing skills. Priority will be given to applicants who have overcome barriers similar to those confronting program participants.
Computer Student Assistant: Duties include providing computer support to EOP, Learning Center and Tutorial Center staff and/or students; Monitoring EOP, Learning Center and Tutorial labs to ensure problem resolution, system/data access, and optimal system performance; Cleaning and maintaining computers (hardware and software) in a lab setting; Troubleshooting program errors, printer problems, e-mail failure, and Internet access failure; Upgrading small and minor hardware installation and/or install software when necessary; Assisting staff in problem solving and exploring solutions. Ability to communicate effectively with users having different levels of technical backgrounds is essential. Priority will be given to applicants who have overcome barriers similar to those confronting program participants.
EOP/SSS Student Assistant: Duties include answering a multi-line telephone, taking accurate messages or referring callers as appropriate; making appointments for students; making phone calls to remind students of appointments; greeting users of program services and directing them to the proper resource; accurately filing and retrieving student files; performing simple data entry, photocopying, sending faxes, making campus deliveries, and performing other basic clerical tasks as needed. The required work skills include the ability to work independently, to learn new information quickly, and to follow complex directions; familiarity with office protocol including confidentiality, punctuality, professionalism; strong alphabetizing and computer typing skills. Priority will be given to applicants who have overcome barriers similar to those confronting program participants.
Learning Center Student Positions
Learning Assistants – help other college students with their academic skills and study strategies, such as exam preparation, assistance with time management, or research for a paper. The position also involves assessing the student needs, keeping records, making referrals to other campus resources, and performing office duties. Weekly paid training meetings are mandatory. A GPA of 3.0 or higher in college courses a minimum qualification. Science and English majors are encouraged to apply.

Learning Center Office Assistants – help run the daily operations of the Learning and Tutorial Labs. Duties include greeting students, phone work, scheduling appointments, and data entry. Other office tasks include filing, photo copying, and running errands. Work study students are encouraged to apply.

Tutors - Tutors help and guide students to develop their own learning strategies. The tutor will help find answers to questions and help students learn methods to solve problems independently. The tutor will make suggestions to improve students’ study skills for the class for which the students are being tutored. Tutors will be expected to register for a one unit Tutor Training class or (a 4 hour tutor training session each year). Students are required to have received an A or a B in the class that they are tutoring, be enrolled in 6 units (undergraduates) or 4.5 units (graduate students) and recommendation from the Instructor.
