- Graduate student Alex Eaton was awarded the prestigious Switzer Fellowship for the 2007/08 academic year for his work with biogas energy systems in Mexico. Congratulations, Alex!
- The Renewable Energy Student Union (RESU), working in collaboration with faculty member Arne Jacobson, inaugurated a Solar Radiation Monitoring Station (SoRMS) on the roof of the HSU Library. The ceremony took place on May 2, 2007.
- The Schatz Energy Research Center was awarded a $34,000 project to evaluate the quality of white light emitting diode (LED) lamps for off-grid applications in Kenya. The effort, dubbed the Lumina Project, involves collaborative work between faculty member Arne Jacobson and Evan Mills of the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. Graduate students Stephen Kullman and Ranjit Deshmukh are working on the project.
- The Renewable Energy Student Union (RESU) and faculty member Arne Jacobson were awarded a $10,000 P3 Grant from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. The project, which will take place during the 2007-08 academic year, involves the development of a low cost method for evaluating wind resources at sites in Humboldt County.
- The Schatz Energy Research Center was awarded approximately $422,000 over three years to explore the potential to use gasification technology to convert biomass, and especially sugar cane waste, into useful energy products. The effort, which is funded by the Indonesian Sugar Group, is a joint project with the Renewable and Appropriate Energy Laboratory (RAEL) of the University of California, Berkeley. EES and ERE graduate students are working on the project.
