After the construction of the Arcata Marsh And Wildlife sanctuary, plants and animals have been given a new opportunity to sustain themselves where it had been impossible in years passed. Now the Arcata Marsh is home to over 300 species of birds and mammals, as well as over 100 species of plants and 6 species of fish. These plants and animals are crucial to the biological system and many other recreational activities at the Arcata Marsh. They are also important in it's role as a waste water treatment facility.
Only a handful of wastewater
treatment plants use a marsh as a means of processing waste. There are a couple of good
reasons to use this method, the first is the fact a marsh is a great place to induce
wildlife development and habitat, but the second is agriculture and development are
claiming 458,000 acres of wet lands annually and it is cities like Arcata that are making
an excellent attempt to counteract these realities by preserving or turning areas that
were once wetlands back into wetlands.
