Native American Beadwork, Design & Leatherwork
Among the indigenous nations of North America, decorations of clothing and other tools were abundant. Among the decorations, one type of decoration stood out – an eye-catching style that has created a livelihood of craftsmanship for many native people – beadwork! Beadwork is as mysterious as it is beautiful and can turn any simple buckskin bag or clothing into a beautiful work of art.
This class introduces Native American Indian beadwork design and techniques. Students will develop beading skill using traditional and contemporary material. Students will develop their own designs, and learn different styles of beading. Projects will be completed using the “flat stitch” with one and two needles, the “lazy stitch,”and the round beading “peyote stitch.” Students will also learn how to tack beaded designs onto leather projects.
For those wanting to make moccasins, Lakota style design will be taught, including the cutting and construction of a pair of moccasins. (Note: students will need to purchase hides of elk or deer to make the pair. An average pair requires 2.5 feet of leather. The instructors will be able to assist students in finding material sources in class).
A materials fee will provide each student with beading materials (beads, needles, thread, storage case, bees’ wax, and scissors), which the student will keep.

Introduction to the Orff-Schulwerk Process of Music Education
The Orff-Schulwerk process of music education, founded by the composer Carl Orff,is based on creating music from the point of view of the composer. Young children can create and respond to music using movement, speech patterns, and improvisation, and in the process develop the skills of phrasing, form, ensemble, harmony and orchestration. Although this class is geared toward music educators, classroom teachers can find this process a powerful tool to enhance literature, drama and listening skills. Class participation is expected, and students will play a variety of percussion instruments, including xylophones and glockenspiels.
Students should wear comfortable clothing for movement, and will need a soprano recorder.
Prerequisites: attendees should be current or future music or classroom teachers with some background in music.

The Holocaust and Other Genocides
The American philosopher George Santayana once said that if man doesn’t learn anything from history he is doomed to repeat it. Today, we see a variety of oppressions including genocidal massacres and dehumanization of others. The Holocaust, one of the major examples of genocide in human history, clearly indicates to us how humans are capable of losing their moral moorings.
This course will focus on the history of anti-Semitism, theological economic, political, cultural and psychological explanations of anti-Semitism (that were the pre-cursor of the Holocaust), the rise of Nazis to power in Germany, and how “The Holocaust is like all other genocides and like no other genocide.” It will cover technology, bureaucracy, and the Holocaust, the world of bystanders, rescuing and resisting, and the social construction of evil. The course will also discuss the reaction of the world and reaction of survivors, denying of the Holocaust today, the new anti-Semitism, the history of genocides and comparative genocides.
Students taking this course for credit will be required to complete all reading assignments prior to each class meeting and be prepared to discuss them. Texts for the course are Wiesel, Night; Browning; Ordinary Men; Hoffer, The True Believer; Oliner, S., and P. Oliner, The Altruistic Personality; Kiernan, Blood and Soil: A World of Genocide and Extermination from Sparta to Darfur.

Iyengar Yoga for Beginners
If you think past injuries or present health problems have to keep you out of a yoga class, think again. Iyengar yoga — often nicknamed “chiropractic” yoga or “furniture” yoga — is a unique style of yoga that uses props to facilitate correct body alignment, works with ailment sequencing, and relies on longer “pose” hold times. It is accessible to all abilities/ages/physical levels, and it is a compliment to many other types of yoga.
Various props such as chairs, blankets, blocks and straps will be used to explore this therapeutic yoga. We’ll discuss the history of yoga and the research that shows how a regular yoga practice often results in overcoming stiffness, improving posture, and reducing or eliminating aches, pains and common ailments.
You will also get an outline for a daily routine that you can do in your own home, tailor-made for your particular problem areas. Please bring a yoga belt and mat, a blanket (5-6 sq. ft.), and an open heart.
