Watercolor for You

Beginning and continuing students are welcome to join in either or both of this two-part, creative, relaxed watercolor class. Learn techniques of color theory, wash, wet-into-wet, indenting, layering, salt, alcohol, spatter, miskit, sandpaper, plastic wrap and more. Instructor demonstrations, hands-on practice and art book examples will help and inspire your creative journey. Bring a 2B pencil, a kneaded eraser, 2 sheets of watercolor paper and any other watercolor supplies to the first class. A supply list and discount coupon will be handed out then. We will paint at the first class.

Barbara Pulliam has an MFA from California State Long Beach. She has been teaching in various places in Humboldt County for 17 years and is a working/exhibiting artist with her art studio in Eureka. Barbara is an award-winning artist with work in private collections around the United States, Japan and England.

Photo 101: Beyond Snapshots!

Isn't it time to finally learn the basics for taking a GREAT photograph? Instead of spending hours at the computer fixing/improving your photos, you'll soon be taking fabulous photos that will impress your family and friends. Through hands-on demonstrations, assignments, critiques, videos and discussions, you will learn helpful techniques that will greatly improve your photography skills. Gain an understanding of what's involved in creating photos that will be treasured for generations to come. The final project will be to create a book that documents a segment of your own life and demonstrates your new skills. Selected photographs from these will be shown at Ramones Cafe in Old Town Eureka in conjunction with"Arts Alive" on Nov. 1. The last class will be hanging this show.

Lorraine Miller-Wolf has been a local professional photographer for over 25 years.? She has a teaching credential from HSU and has taught several classes in photojournalism at Jacoby Creek School.

The Films of Billy Wilder

Learn about the life and work of one of the most notable auteur directors of American cinema. Billy Wilder's films run the spectrum from comedy to film noir mystery to psychological drama. Add some who-dunits, a farce or two, and a WW II prison camp classic, and you have just a few highlights of this brilliant director/writer's career. Follow Wilder's career and life through almost five decades. View the films Double Indemnity, Sunset Boulevard, Stalag 17, Witness for the Prosecution, The Apartment and The Front Page.

Philip Wright has a B.A. in English and an M.A. in theatre arts with an emphasis in film production from HSU. He taught film history at College of the Redwoods and worked over 25 years in local television production. Recently he has hosted several film presentations for the County Library Based on the Book film series.
