INTRODUCTORY & CERTIFICATE COURSES
Creating digitally is simple and satisfying when you utilize the tools and functions of Adobe Creative Suite 4: Photoshop®, Illustrator®, InDesign® and Dreamweaver®. Learn to integrate Illustrator’s crisp line capacities with state-of-the-art Photoshop effects, then easily import and manipulate from within the dynamic page layout program of InDesign, or publish to the web with Dreamweaver. Though each course is offered as an introduction to the application, the instructor is knowledgeable and able to answer advanced questions.
Earn an Adobe Creative Suite Certificate of Completion* upon completion of three classes (Photoshop and Illustrator, plus either InDesign or Dreamweaver).
Though not required, upon enrollment in any of the courses and with the purchase of an HSU ID card ($5), you will be eligible to purchase the academic version of the Adobe CS 4 software from the HSU Bookstore at a substantial savings.
Students work individually on Macintosh computers. Knowledge of computer basics required.
To receive your Certificate of Completion, fill out a certificate request form upon completion of all three courses and submit it to the Office of Extended Education. Request form available from the instructor or at this link (PDF).

Intro to Adobe Photoshop CS4
Adobe Photoshop CS4 is the quintessential imaging application for digital camera enthusiasts, professional photographers and other digital media artists. This fast-paced course, aimed at beginners and professionals, offers an introduction to basic digital image reproduction and tools, as well as hands-on in-class experience learning the powerful features of Photoshop’s image-editing strategies and techniques. With on-screen demonstration throughout, enrollees will complete a series of exercises utilizing layers, selections, gradients, painting, repairing and other special effects. Intro to Adobe InDesign CS4
Learn the simple and effective page layout program that integrates Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop and Acrobat. This class is a fast-paced hands-on exploration into the InDesign page layout and typesetting features. Learn the use of tools, menus and panels to create single and multi-page documents. Basic typographic terminology will be defined and applied, including special text effects. In class, explore page setup attributes, master pages, guides and margins, color definition, effects, layers, links and graphic formats. InDesign CS4 is a must-have for successfully printing all your newsletter, interactive PDF or book-length print projects!

Intro to Adobe Illustrator CS4
Learn the powerful design program used to create dynamic artwork with crisp clean lines and brilliant colors. Illustrator is used for logos, technical and free-form illustrations, banners, posters, business cards and stationary, as well as web images. Based on in-class demonstration with hands-on experience, you will become familiar with tracing, drawing and editing digital images with pen tools; flowing type to paths; converting any image to outlines; applying special effects and painting with color, textures and gradients. You will learn the diversity and ease of working on layers. This is a fast-paced introductory course for beginners and/or professionals. Drawing skills are not needed; in fact, Illustrator offers everyone the opportunity to create beautiful artwork with no prior drawing skills.

Intro to Adobe Dreamweaver CS4
Dreamweaver CS4 makes it possible for anyone to create and upload web pages and sites. Assuming class participants have no previous knowledge of web development, this introductory course takes you step-by-step through the basic tools, panels and features of this dynamic Adobe web application. Discover Dreamweaver’s simple interactive features such as links and navigation tabs for images or text. Learn the essentials of site structure, importing images and text, and publishing (uploading) a website. Using Dreamweaver, your web design will go live with no html code knowledge necessary!

Advanced Adobe Photoshop CS4
This one-day course is an excellent ‘beyond-the-basics’ opportunity to learn the tricks and techniques that maximize Photoshop CS4’s professional potential. The instructor will demonstrate complex features and timesaving actions empowering participants to work in an advanced Photoshop environment. This course will build on basic skills gained in the Introduction to Photoshop CS4 course.
Explore advanced image and color adjustments, retouch and repair techniques, channel features and advanced compositing. Manipulate your images on layers using complete color control. Gain an understanding of color management, ICC profiles and print quality consistency. Learn to manage your metadata including copyright information, files and workflow from within the Adobe Bridge application.
No materials are required. Instruction will be demonstrated on a large overhead screen with the hands-on capability to follow each step using supplied files. You will have the opportunity to discuss each stage of the process by asking questions and getting immediate feedback.
Prerequisite: Introduction to Adobe Photoshop or approval of the instructor.

Adobe CS4 Project Workshop
This five-session workshop offers individualized instruction for participants as they create, from start to finish, a project of their own choosing using one or all of the Adobe applications listed above. A unique opportunity to create that newsletter template, logo or art project you’ve wanted to begin, but put off as technical questions arose. Through brief over-head demonstrations and in-depth individual instruction, the instructor offers years of experience in design and the Adobe programs to assist each participant as they complete their individual project.
Participants are expected to bring projects to work on in the lab. Some project time may be needed outside of class. Projects must be pre-approved by the instructor based on a project proposal or a project list presented to the class.
Preregistration required no later than April 7, 2010.
Prerequisite: Completion of the Adobe CS4 Introduction Courses [above] or approval of the instructor.
