2010 Composition Contest
for Brass Chamber Music

Original previously unpublished works for brass

 

First Prize: $2000

Second Prize: $1000

Third Prize: $500

Compositions should be an original, previously unpublished work for brass sextet (211.11)– 2 trumpets (cornets, flugelhorns), horn (in F), trombone, euphonium and tuba. The composition should be a multi movement work, from 13-15 minutes in length. Composer’s original material written for another complement and adapted for brass sextet is acceptable.

You may write for trumpets in other keys (C, E-flat, picc), but please include Bb parts; trombone and euphonium parts in bass clef.

Difficulty level: Should be playable by the average college ensemble.

All works will be PLAYED and judged by the BCMW coaching staff.

Winners’ works to be performed during the 2010 Brass Chamber Music Workshop, held in Arcata, California. Amateur musicians in a workshop format will perform music.

DIRECTIONS FOR SUBMISSIONS:

Please include a complete score, a completed set of parts, a CD with a pdf of score and parts, and a recording. Recording may be a synthesized midi recording. All entries should be received no later than February 1, 2010. Winning submissions will be notified by May 15, 2010.

In order to ensure anonymity, do NOT put your name on the score or on any of the parts. Put all contact information (name, address, phone, email) in a SEALED envelope with the TITLE of your composition on the outside of the envelope.

Please print all scores and parts double-sided, taking page turns into consideration. Also, please bind and/or tape scores and parts. Please do not submit loose pages.

One copy of all submissions becomes the property of the BCMW, for use at the workshop and may be performed at a later date. Composer retains copyrights of all works submitted. One duplicated copy will be made for archival purposes.

2009 COMPOSITION CONTEST WINNERS

  • First Prize: Little Spanish…Little Latin by John Palmer, Kingston, Ontario, Canada
  • Second Prize: Concertpiece for Brass Octet by Michael Mikulka, Mt. Pleasant, Mich.
  • Third prize: Scenes from Sylvester Park by Mark Thome, Tumwater, Wash.
  • Honorable Mention (in no particular order):
           Octet in E-Flat by Philip Orem, Arlington Heights Ill.
           Humbolt Currents by Michael Kibbe, Tujunga, Calif.
           Eight Short Pieces for Brass Octet by Brian Sadler, Mesa, Ariz.

The 2009 contest focused on original, previously unpublished works for brass octet (3131) – 3 trumpets (cornets, flugelhorns), horn (in F), 3 trombones (bass clef), and tuba. Euphonium (bass clef) may be substituted for one trombone part (312.11). The compositions were multi movement works, from 13-15 minutes in length. Composer’s original material written for another complement and adapted for brass octet was acceptable. Difficulty level: Playable by an average college ensemble.

2008 COMPOSITION CONTEST WINNERS:

  • First Prize – Celtic Suite by John Palmer (Ontario, Canada)
  • Second Prize – At the Movies by Brian Sadler (Tempe, Arizona)
  • Third Prize – Sonatina for Brass Septet by Krisnan Oberoi (San Diego, California)
  • Honorable Mention – The Escape Artist by Jukka Viitasaari (Tampere, Finland)

The 2008 contest focused on original works for brass septet written for college-level ensemble. Compositions were requested to be multi movement works, from 13-15 minutes in length.  All qualifying contest entries were played and evaluated by the workshop coaching staff.

The coaching staff consisted of professional brass musicians from the San Francisco Bay Area and Los Angeles. The winners’ works were performed during the 2009 Brass Chamber Music Workshop. “We have added some wonderful music to our library and I am anxious for all workshop participants to have an opportunity to play it,” said Clements. “I am especially excited by the level of international participation in the contest.  Congratulations to the winners, and many thanks to all the fine composers who submitted works.”
