INSTRUCTORS

JoAnne Berke (Level: Professional Development for Teachers) is the chair of the HSU Art Department and teaches classes in the art education area. Prof. Berke is an exhibiting artist who has shown in many museums and galleries throughout the United States. She has completed two mosaic murals collaborating with students in Hoopa and would love to share her experiences.

Jenifer Sherman (Level "Me and Mine") earned her degree in Art Education from Humboldt State University in 2004. Since that time, she has enjoyed working with the Hoopa Elementary 6th, 7th, and 8th graders, and the Humboldt County Office of Education’s Court and Community School PEPP Program. Other projects include: Participating as a California Artist in Residence for the Redwood Community Action Agency where she worked with several different groups from young teens to adults; teaching a semester of art to fourth graders at the Laurel Tree School; and, facilitating a cultural arts experience in San Francisco for the RCAA Youth Service Bureau ART Lab.

Chelsi Kirby (Level I) is a practicing multimedia artist and is currently studying printmaking and sculpture at HSU. She is a student of elementary and art education and has been a part of the Studio School program since the fall term of 2006. She enjoys working with children and finds inspiration from working and learning with them.

Janice Sharman-Hand (Level I & Level II) holds a B.A. in art education as well as a single subject credential in art from Humboldt State University. Janice taught at HSU’s Art Academy from 1996 to 2005. Other related teaching experiences in Humboldt County include teaching art at Dow’s Prairie, Fieldbrook, and Rio Dell elementary schools through Art Line, an artists-in-schools project with Humboldt County Schools and Center Arts of HSU. She is also a muralist and has designed and supervised various public service mural projects with children, teens and adults. She says, “My professional and primary goal as an artist is to combine my love of art with my devotion to public programs that create a sense of community.

Erica Carrillo and Laura Sherrow (Level II) have been teaching art to youth, in a variety of educational settings, for a number of years. Erica’s studio focus is on 3D artwork including ceramics, jewelry, mixed media and metal sculpture. Laura has been passionate about making art since she was a small child. Currently she is working with mixed media creating sculptures and painting.

Tim Clewell and Lizzy Dostal (Level III) bring their experiences in studio art and art history to Level III. Tim is a watercolorist and an avid cartoonist. He has had several editorial cartoons featured in local publications. Lizzy is currently concentrating on painting and is very passionate about art history.

Sarah Kenworthy and Carrie Mayfield (Level V)
Sarah’s goal is to become an elementary school teacher and effectively integrate art into the elementary curriculum. Her has studied a variety of art mediums including drawing, painting, sculpture and ceramics. Carrie started painting twenty years ago with Bob Ross. After working as a nanny and tutor in the San Francisco Bay Area she moved to Humboldt to study Studio Art and Art Education. Her studio focus has included painting, figure drawing and photography. She has owned her own photography business since 2000.

Jennifer Fierro and Shannon McDonell (Level V) are currently studying Studio Art and Art Education. Their combined backgrounds include teaching art to children and exhibiting their paintings in a number of solo, juried and group exhibitions. Shannon’s studio focus is in printmaking and ceramics while Jennifer enjoys experimenting with various mediums to create her artwork.
