Query training update

Friday, September 30th, 2005

(Some of you have been newly added to this list, to correct previous omissions.)

Response to the recent announcement of Query Manager training has been overwhelming. In light of this, we have decided to limit the scheduled Oct 11-12 sessions to a selected list of users. That list includes endusers who had already approached us about getting Query writing access, as well as internal Fiscal users who haven’t previously received training. In addition, users who already have access and training in Query writing will be invited to audit the training.

I will shortly individually email the users who are on this invitation list, either to participate or to audit. If you do not receive a confirmation, you are not on the roster for this training. (No unsolicited drop-ins, please.)

We will retain the total list of users who have responded, and decide how to meet this demand at some future time in terms of both training and support. Any user who is interested but has not yet responded is welcome to indicate their interest to be placed on this “waiting list”. Just to emphasize, this training is about building your own queries in PS Finance, not simply running existing queries as all inquiry users can do. Requisition entry users who are interested in query writing must obtain inquiry access first.

For your reference, the original announcement can be found at http://www.humboldt.edu/~fiscal/hsufinuser/. Links to information on available trainings can be found on the PS Finance main page of our Fiscal Web pages at http://www.humboldt.edu/~fiscal/topics/psfin/psfin.html.

PS Finance Query training

Wednesday, September 28th, 2005

We will be offering a two-class training sequence in Query Manager for PS Finance Oct 11-12 in the CMS Lab.

Session I: Tue Oct 11, 9:00-11:00am — Introduction to PS Query Manager. How to build queries in PS Finance: hands-on lecture for new query writers. Limit: 12 stations. Additional attendees may drop in to audit without a workstation.

Session II: Wed Oct 12, 1:30-3:30pm — PS Query Manager Workshop. Open format for existing query writers, including those newly trained in the first session. Query example, plus topics TBD.

To register for one or both sessions, please email me at kpg7001@humboldt.edu (or, our generic address at fiscal@humboldt.edu). Attendees must be granted access to Query Manager in PS Finance to build their own private queries, so advance notice is desired.

Those interested in the second session may suggest topics via email.

!!!STERN WARNING!!!: PS Query writing is not for the faint-hearted. It is not a magic bullet for the casual enduser, but can be a useful supplementary tool for committed users who are motivated to work to gain a better understanding of the Finance data. In offering this training, we invite such users to self-identify. We reserve the right to withdraw Query writing access at any time.

PS Finance training for FY2005

Friday, September 2nd, 2005

We’d like to officially announce our training plan for FY2005-06. The redesigned program is a reflection both of our own needs and our discussion with enduser representatives.

We will offer introductory training for new users on a quarterly basis this year. This training consists of the two separate two-hour classes, Navigation and Account Management, offered in close sequence. The classes were first offered this year at the end of August, so we will expect to repeat them in late fall, early spring, and late spring. As always, class descriptions and schedules are available on the Fiscal Web pages. Though it is strongly recommended, we will not require users to take this sequence before getting access. If a new user has another source of instruction, including colleagues, they may request that their userid/password be provided to them in advance of any class.

The other classes in last year’s five-course cycle will no longer be offered as such. Instead, to accommodate training needs beyond the introductory, we invite you to make suggestions for training topics by emailing us at our generic Fiscal address, fiscal@humboldt.edu. When enough requests have been received for a particular topic, or we see a need to roll out specific information to you, we will schedule and announce a session devoted to that topic.

We hope this will allow us to flexibly and efficiently meet user needs. In the meantime, our Web pages at http://www.humboldt.edu/~fiscal/topics/psfin/psfin.html remain a rich source of information about PS Finance that you can access at any time. The pages have been updated to reflect the new training plan.
