Pathology Laboratory
Humboldt State University is one of the few universities in California with
an on-campus Fish Pathology Laboratory. The Laboratory occupies about 840 square
feet of the first floor of the new Wildlife and Fisheries Building Addition.
A prep area occupies 257 square feet. The research lab occupies the remaining
583 square feet. The research laboratory offers opportunities for both undergraduate
and graduate research projects. The laboratory is fully equipped for basic
research in fish health and diseases. In particular, space is dedicated to
bacteriology, parasitology (including myxozoans, protozoan, and helminthes),
and histology. Much of the equipment is relatively new having come with the
building addition in 1999-2000.
Microscope capabilities, for example, include light, phase contrast, and
fluorescence with 35mm camera, digital camera, and video camera. Some current
research projects include: Parasites of sablefish (undergraduate), how salinity
affects parasites of three-spined stickleback (undergraduate), and life history
and parasites of sharks in Humboldt Bay (graduate).
