Department of Fisheries Biology Scholarships
A limited number of scholarships for Fisheries Biology undergraduates, newly admitted, and continuing graduate students are offered through the Fisheries Biology Department, they are listed below according to a students ranking.
Undergraduate Students
San Jose Flycasters
The San Jose Flycasters support one $1,000 scholarship annually. This
scholarship supports undergraduate research on the ecology, conservation,
ormanagement
of a recreationally important finfish species. Prospective applicants
must be enrolled in the undergraduate program, Department of Fisheries,
Humboldt
State University. Applications are normally due in early March.
New Graduate Students
The following scholarships are offered to exceptionally promising new graduate
students as financial assistance and as an inducement to encourage them
to enroll in the HSU Fisheries Biology MS Program.
James Joseph Award
James Joseph, Director of the InterAmerican Tropical Tuna Commission
(IATTC) and HSU's first Fisheries MS graduate, has provided substantial
gifts
to the HSU Fisheries Department. Together, these gifts allow the Department
to offer one award of $2,500 or $5,000, annually or biannually, depending
on when the award was last granted. The award goes to the outstanding
Fisheries MS applicant in the Marine Fisheries area. This one time
award is provided to the successful applicant at entrance into the
Fisheries
Masters Program at HSU.
Robert Miller Awards
Robert Miller, a former HSU fisheries student who has had success in
ornamental fish collection, sales and rearing, is supporting one $5,000
graduate
fellowship each year to unusually well-qualified applicants. These
awards may be granted to applicants in any area of fisheries and are
given when
successful applicants enter the Fisheries Masters Program.
Reduced Tuition Awards for New Non-Resident Graduate Students
Newly accepted non-resident graduate students will automatically be considered
for reduced tuition awards on a competitive basis with other graduate
students in the College of Natural Resources and Sciences. These tuition
awards generally reduce tuition costs to what they would be for California
resident graduate students.
Continuing Graduate Students
Graduate Students may find the deadlines
for scholarships and grants most helpful.
The following awards are available for continuing graduate students who have developed formal thesis proposals for their research.
Marin Rod and Gun Club
The Marin Rod and Gun Club supports three $1,500 scholarships annually.These
scholarships support graduate student research on any recreationally
important fish species or group of species. At the request of the sponsors,
emphasis is placed on the ecology and conservation of west coast finfish.
Prospective applicants must be enrolled in the graduate program, Department
of Fisheries, Humboldt State University. Applications are normally
due near the end of November.
Tyee Club of San Francisco
The Tyee Club of San Francisco provides one $1,000 scholarship annually.This
scholarship supports graduate student research on the ecology, conservation,
and (or) restoration of Pacific coast salmonids. Prospective applicants
must be enrolled in the graduate program, Department of Fisheries,
Humboldt State University. Applications are normally due in mid-December.
Orange County Flyfishers' Club; Harry Kime Scholarship
The Orange County Flyfishers' Club provide one $1,000 scholarship annually. This scholarship supports graduate student research on the ecology and (or) conservation of west coast fish species. On alternating years the award supports research on salmonids and marine finfish. Prospective applicants must be enrolled in the graduate program in the Department of Fisheries, Humboldt State University. Applications are normally due in mid-December.
