Certificates of Study

Certificates of study are collections of courses in subjects other than those in which majors or minors are offered. A certificate of study is not the same as a teaching certificate, a credential, or a license. Three Certificates of Study are associated with Forestry and Watershed Management. Forest Measurements

This certificate is designed to prepare students to conduct measurements and inventories of forest resources for those agencies and industries that manage and utilize forest resources. The certificate is designed to meet the measurement category of the Civil Service requirements for forester. Geographic Information Systems & Remote Sensing

This certificate is a post-baccalaureate program cooperatively administered by the departments of Computing Science, Environmental and Natural Resource Sciences, and Forestry and Watershed Management . The goal of the program is to prepare students to apply the technologies of GIS and multispectral remote sensing, including digital image processing, to various disciplines. The program provides students an opportunity to focus and document training in GIS, remote sensing, and related spatial analysis technologies. Course themes include:

  • Computer programming
  • Database design and management
  • Geographic information systems
  • Mapping science, and
  • Remote sensing

Students pursuing this certificate are also required to participate in a seminar.

Wildland Fire Management

This certificate is designed for those wishing to enhance or upgrade knowledge and skills in managing wildland fuels, prescribed fire, fire suppression, and fire ecology. Students can supplement previously taken college courses to help qualify for employment with various agencies and companies that manage wildlands. Course themes include:

  • Fire ecology
  • Fire behavior and suppression
  • Wildland fire use, and
  • Wildland fuels management
