Welcome to Business 110, Introduction to Business. The primary objectives of Business 110 are as follows:

1. To become familiar with general business and economic concepts in a worldwide context.

2. To integrate this knowledge with career choices and life direction.

3. To use a business context to develop thinking, research, and expression skills.

You'll participate in a number of class activities to accomplish these objectives. First, you'll take responsibility for learning the basic vocabulary and concepts of business by carefully reading chapters in your textbook. Once during the semester, you'll be a member of a teaching team that will cover the key concepts in one text chapter. More details on this activity are given in the Chapter Leaders discussion.

After each chapter has been covered by the Chapter Leaders, I will present supplementary material including related current news stories, video presentations, and other materials that will highlight and build on important concepts from the text, rather than rehashing the text point by point.

Finally, you'll hear from and have the opportunity to question a variety of guest speakers from Humboldt State and the community. They'll help you understand how to do business research, guide you in exploring career choices and life direction, expand on text topics, and discuss their personal experiences in the business world.

Extra credit opportunities are available. These consist of short research and presentation assignments I call "Extra Credit Presentation Exercises." Your assignment is to select a business topic from my list and explore it beyond the text coverage. You will present your findings to the class.

You'll find this mix of learning opportunities to be a great way to learn about the business world. Let's share a challenging and productive semester!
