- Mark Wheetley discussed efforts to incorporate tsunami mitigation issues into the Humboldt Beach and Dunes Management Plan for the 26 miles of Humboldt County Coastline from the mouth of the Mad River to Table Bluff county Park. A map has been prepared showing the locations of 5 proposed sign locations.
The group suggested:
- Large kiosk - tsunami information signs with bullets to be placed at the 5 proposed sign locations on the map: Mad River County Park, Manila Community Center, Louisiana Pacific property, BLM Samoa Dunes area, South Jetty, and the South Spit County Park.
- Small tsunami hazard signs be posted at numerous locations along trails.
- Explore placing large tsunami hazard zone signs along road where the NOAA inundation zone crosses roads.
ACTION ITEM: Linda/Larry will solicit representation from CalTrans in this group, and explore the procedure for locating tsunami signs on roads.
Discussion: Designating safe areas on the peninsula and gaining access to high dunes is still a problem.
- Humboldt County Parks:
- Bob Walsh prepared a plan for 9 county park sites in addition to those included in the Humboldt Beach and Dunes plan above, for the posting of tsunami hazard zone signs.
Additional discussion: Mark Wheetley suggested tying tsunami mitigation efforts to the state coastal trail "Coast Walk" project and will explore mechanism for such a linkage.
- Distributed copies of Susan McBride's list of tsunami mitigation needs.
- The next meeting was scheduled for Tuesday June 10, 10 - 12 at the Redwood National Park Office, Arcata.
