ALUMNI MESSAGE BOARD

(Submitted November 24, 2003 10:46:44 by Robert Ruehl)

Hi! '87 grad. After 12 years of trying, it took a four year hitch in Naval Aviation to convince me that actually graduating from college was within my abilities. The Dirty Half Doz. esp. fellow Navy aviator and rabid hockey fan J. Harper were just the ticket. I worked for the NWS in Eureka and then the NSF doing aviation weather support for the Antarctic Prog. at South Pole. Now back at NWS as a MetTech in Eureka. Best to all and special hello to "Ben" and Cmdr.Plank

What a wonderful article about my friends, the HSU Geography Professors. As to what you meant to me as a student who spent so much of my time with you, I have this to say: I wished I could have been one of you...All my best, Brian Ellis, 5125 Gary St., San Diego, CA 92115 sandiegoscreenwriter@yahoo.com. Currently transitioning from a job in computer software to a career in screenwriting and filmmaking. Ben-I'm carrying the torch now...

Greetings from Santa Barbara! I missed the reunion but I thoroughly enjoyed the Alumni newsletter and I passed it along to the folks in Tahoe (TRPA is still dominated by Humboldt grads). I was saddened to hear of Dr. Harper’s passing. He was an exceptional teacher. I left Tahoe & TRPA in 2000 for Santa Barbara and the California Coastal Commission. SB is great, but I can’t wait to take a road trip to Humboldt soon!

I just want to say how great the reunion was in April- Thanks to everyone who helped put it together and to those who made it there. I hope we will continue to have reunions every few years; I miss Humboldt and would like to keep in touch with the Geography Department and Alumni. I am currently working at College of Marin and living in Fairfax (Marin County). My address is PO Box 2111, San Anselmo, CA 94979.

Greetings from Western Michigan University! Just landed a job as a Visiting Professor in the Geography Department here. On my way to being the quintessential higher ed mercenary. Should have my dissertation completed by December. Wish I could have been at the Reunion... Still trying to find some way to migrate back to the Pacific Northwest. Hope all of the class of 94' are doing well.

How was the reunion? I really wanted to go - unfortunately I had just made a trip to HSU, and my in- laws (who live there) were coming to see us that weekend. ~sigh~ Hope all went well, and you will plan another one that I can attend. Study hard for those finals! ;)

Wow!! HSU Geography is on the rise!! Reeling from shame that I was not able to attend the CGS meeting in 99 at the newest of our CSUs: my local Cal State Channel Islands, I was even more saddened by the passing of John Harper. I started at HSU as a wandering undeclared freshman straight out of Ventura High School in 1992. Then, I enrolled in Harper's Physical Geography class, and that was it. It was Geography all the way baby!!

I owe my love of maps, cultural & biogeography, travel, world news and more to Bennion, Harper, Coleman & Plank. I will always remember the "world view" from the windows/steps of Founders Hall. Presently I live/work in Santa Cruz as the Nursery & Garden Curator for the Horticulture Dept. at Cabrillo College. I hear rumors of an alumni get-together in April but see no mention on the web page...whats happening? My snail mail address is 6500 Soquel Drive, Aptos, CA 95003

Hello to Coleman, Leeper, Cranfield. After Humboldt I went to the University of Florida (Masters). Then entered a Ph.D. program at Ohio State University, but after 3 years I took a job at the U.S. International Trade Commission in Washington, D.C. In 1996, my wife and I moved to the Seattle area, where I took job with U.S. Customs, and I currently work as an Account Manager with Customs in Seattle. We have two kids, 5 and 3. 17708 30th Dr. SE, Bothell, WA 98012

Great idea this Newsletter. I remember when Dr. Harper would come to the department early to let us in to get the coffee ready for our Bagel Table in the foyer of Founders Hall. He always did make the extra effort where his students were concerned, he will be remembered with respect and fondness, a true professional and a quality person. I should be defending my dissertation by christmas, hope to hear more from everyone. Naim Zeibak '94

Sending compliments on the newsletter and my sympathys at the news of John Harper's passing. He was the first professor that took a genuine interest in my education and development as a person, rather than being just another face in the crowd. He wasn't the only one of the "Dirty Half Dozen" who influence me over the next 4 years though. I'll never forget my first (and last) soy bean loaf at Coleman's farm and backpacking trip with Plank on the Appalachian trail in 1980.

I enjoyed the newsletter tremendously. I too was so sorry to hear about Dr. Harper, his water quality class was one of my favorites! (I graduated in 1982) I am teaching high school social studies in the California Gold Country, Sutter Creek specifically. I use my geography background every day. I just finished my master's/administrative credential. I will look forward to the next newsletter.

Nice hearing from HSU again. I haven't heard 'Gentle Ben's' name in twenty five years! Graduated early in '76 after spending two great years up there wrestling, living in King Salmon, and student interning at the Eureka Community Development Department. Worked as a planner for five years, then went into electronics and telecommunications. Am now a privat consultant and expect to receive my MBA after the spring quarter.

(Submitted February 10, 2002 00:32:57 by Nancy Walsh '78 (Herring))

Wonderful newsletter! Sorry to hear about the passing of Dr. Harper. I was lucky enough to have each of the "dirty half-dozen". Our daughter followed in our footsteps and is now a Junior at HSU, though her major is Geology. I never pursued a career in Geography and am extremely jealous of the interns for the NGS! I am currently a web site designer for various non-profit organizations as well as a machine embroiderer for their fund-raising efforts.
