ALUMNI MENTORS AND TESTIMONIALS
John Bissell - Higa-Burkholder Association
I would be happy to mentor up and coming geographers. I have worked as a land use planner since the Monday after graduation. I started in the public sector with Madera County California, then moved to Washington State where I was a senior planner for the City of Edmonds . I left municipal work in 1998 to peruse a career as a private sector land use planner. In this capacity I work for both public and private clients. I am now a principal at Higa Burkholder Associates, a Land Use Planning and Engineering Firm with offices in Everett , Washington and Springfield Oregon . We work on diverse projects from municipal project review and comprehensive planning and to private commercial and residential developments.

Amanda Watty - 2003 Graduate of Geography
I am working in Bend , Oregon for the City of Bend Planning Department. I am an Assistant Planner which does not do justice to my job because I don't assist anyone. I am just a lower planner on the scale since I am just out of college. My degree has helped me immensely in my career, not only because I know more about what's going on around me but also because I am more aware of where things are and what other places around the world are like. Geography has also made me very curious of other places around the world. This helps me in my career because being a government worker, I get good vacation, which then allows me to travel to the places I'm most curious about. I would be glad to serve as a mentor to current geography majors a s far as answering questions, giving advice and sharing experiences.
